Big Girls Don't Cry

Harper is three weeks old today.

Scott's mom had this cute wreath made for us to hang when we brought Harper home (before she knew we would be going to the NICU) - so we hung it out today.
It's been a busy day - that sweet, happy baby who never cried, slept all the time, and didn't eat much? I'm not sure where she went. We woke up today (actually all of last night) with a baby who can't get enough food and screams bloody murder until she gets it. I feel like I've pretty much fed her non-stop all day. But when I get tired - I try to remember how thankful I am that she can scream and how thankful I am to be feeding her. It was only a few days ago when she had to fed through tubes and was not able to cry. Thank you God for a baby who just wants to eat!
We have been trying out all the baby stuff today - the swing, the bouncy seat, the pack and play. This was the only few minutes today that she slept.
I am so thankful that my mom is staying a few days with us to get us settled. She has been SOOOOOOOOO helpful. She went to wal-mart for us, cooked us this wonderful dinner, has helped me with Harper............we are so lucky to have her. Especially since she has been able to stay through all of this with Harper. We are lucky to have the support of all of our parents - we are thankful for them. And we know Harper loves them very much.

Harper and Dawson have not met yet. My dad is keeping him another week or so until we get settled in and then we'll bring him home. I'm glad - I need to get situated before I let the two of them meet. Besides, Dawson is loving the country life with his grandpa - we think he won't want to come home.

I better run check on baby............................................have a great weekend - love you all!

The wreath is BEAUTIFUL -- not to compare with Harper though. I am so happy for you all. A crying hungry baby is a good thing. ;o)

Big girls TOTALLY cry! There will definitely many days/nights of tears from both you AND her! Ahhh - the sweet life with a newborn. This too shall pass.

BTW - We just got out of the car from dinner where that song was on. I was still singing it when I opened my Dashboard and saw your blog title. Too funny!

So glad you all are getting settled into being home. Looks like Harper is enjoying all her fun baby stuff. Can't wait to see pictures of her in all her beautiful outfits, bows, and hats.

I'm glad that she likes the bouncy seat. The baby we fostered last summer hated the bouncy seat and the swing. I am so glad you are home. She is beautiful. An mothers are wonderful, aren't they. I have called my mom many times day and night when I needed help.

Yes, there will definitely be many a sleepless night, but you are right, it is absolutely something to be thankful for that she is HOME and eating so well. That's GREAT news.

The pictures of her in her home are wonderful. What great memories. And thank goodness for our moms who seem to know just what we need. :)

Glad to see you made it safely home. Hope tonight goes better!

Oh, Kelly!! You are in great company with my sister right now. They just brought their little guy home last night and he screamed and wanted to eat ALL night long, as well! So, Heather hasn't had much sleep and is totally loving having my mom out there right now. If only Auntie Jess could be out there too...I'd be completely thrilled. Oh well, just 5 more days and I'll be holding and meeting my sweet little nephew, Jorgen!! He and Harper would make such a cute little pair!! Wish they lived closer! :)

P.S. I have something on my blog for you...so when you have a chance, feel free to pop over and take a look. Please don't feel like you have to pass it on, but I just wanted you to know how much you mean to me and when I received the award today...you were the 1st person I wanted to pass it on to. If you've already gotten it, I am super sorry!!

Okay, I'll stop typing and I'm so excited that I'm so close to the top of the comments. Well, I guess probably not anymore since I've typed a book!!

Love you lots,
Jess :)

P.S. Please tell Harper I love her, as well!!

Congratulations! I know its hard the first couple of months. Its all a blur. If your exclusively breastfeeding it will feel like you are nursing every 30 minutes. Build up that supply, hang in there, it does get easier!

Its so great you have family to help out! It really helps alot! Oh, my daughter also has that brown/pink polka dot sleeper! so cute!

Ahh Kelly so glad to see ya'll home and happy! Aren't moms the best?!! Yup thats a healthy growing baby girl ready to eat all the time! I won't forget I felt like that for about a good 2 weeks! Congrats once again on your little miracle. She is truly a beautiful little girl.

It is so funny how they change once they come home. As a mother of 4 the last 2 being twins I know how demanding they are and if you are anything like me you do exactly what they want. I am assuming you are nursing so she is probably building up your milk suppy. I remember nursing for at least an hour. Cherish these moments b/c you will never get them back. Kuddos to Nonny. My mom seems just like her. Cooking, cleaning, taking care of the baby while I caught a cat nap. Enjoy Kelly you deserve every moment. Let everyone wait on you and do nothing but hold and feed that precious Harper.

Mama, she is just a growing little girl! Perfectly normal! :) Just remember, she is in a new place and will have to get used to her new surroundings, sounds, smells, and sights. My Dear son also spent 3 weeks in the NICU and did the exact same thing! It got better about 5 years later...lol J/K!
Congratulations and I wish you all the best!

Our stay was 19 days. What they don't always tell you is while in the NICU they get their days and nights mixed up. Eventually that sweet soul will settle into her routine and you will be able to get some rest.

I have been a stalker since the day Harper was born and have been praying like crazy the whole time! So very glad for you all that she is home. Just a suggestion on the Dawson front--we have two labs that are like children to us. We also have an 18 month old joy, Delaynee--who was shared with us by the Good Lord after 5 years of fertility issues. I was very worried about the three meeting. We had Delaynee sleep in two blankets during her first night in the hospital and then her Daddy, Craig, took them home for the dogs to sleep with the second night. By the time they met, they seemed to already know her--a few sniffs with Mom holding her and they were fast friends. Enjoy every minute--it goes by sooooo fast!

Kristin said...

Oh I just loved seeing her at home! Bless her little heart....she must've worked up a good appetite these past few weeks! Welcome to Mommyhood!! It will get easier, I promise! She'll get into more of a routine and then it won't seem like you're awake non-stop. I'm so glad you were able to post today. I was wondering how it was going at home with your precious little family.

God bless you, Kelly!

I have a 4 month old who is exclusively breastfed and when he was super new and tiny I swear he ate all the time. It's great for building up your milk supply so don't worry that she's gonna go hungry just let her eat when she wants and you'll have lots of milk. Good luck with everything and I'm so happy for you that everything is going well now! Also, some slings work really great for nursing when you are out and about.

Anonymous said...

Hi. If you are still nursing, babies usually go through growth spurts at around 3 and 6 weeks. It seems like all they want to do is eat. In a few days you should have more milk and she will be happier. Make sure you eat enough protein, and snacks in the afternoon, also lots of water. It helps with milk production. You get so busy you forget to eat and your body needs it to make milk. I have also heard that babies who have been in ICU are used to a lot of noise, and when they come home it is too quiet. Try running a fan for white noise, or the radio. I hear it helps.

Congratulations on your homecoming. She is beautiful.

I have been following your story and am so glad to see you all home safe and doing well.

It is a good idea to try out all the different gadgets. I have five children and each of them loved and hated different things. I always knew when I found their favorite that is for sure.

Once you and Harper get into a routine of feeding, sleeping and playing things will seem much less hectic. Not that we are not grateful and blessed with every moment with our children.....but the less hectic ones are always certainly welcome!

Kelly, slip a warm heating pad in her crib as soon as you take her out. Cover it up while you nurse her, then REMOVE it when you put her back in. If she is sleeping and full, that cozy residual warmth will insure that she does not awaken so easily. Oh, and do it all in the least amount of light you can--and with as little noise as possible! Hope it helps...Aunt Granny

I remember when my son (4.5) came home from the hospital! He didn't sleep for 3 weeks I SWEAR, LOL. Then I discovered the 'Miracle Blanket'! Google it! WE were SOOO happy! He slept 6.5 hours STRAIGHT the first time we wrapped him in it! Google it, LOL!

My son was in the NICU for 10 weeks (born at 27 weeks), and he had an adjustment moving from the overstimulation of the NICU. He didn't like the lights off b/c he had NEVER experienced darkness in the NICU. So we used a night light the first few months. He also liked noise, so we kept the radio or CDs on low, especially while he slept.
I thought I'd post this in case it helps you all adjust with Harper. And I remember telling myself just how thankful I was for sleepless nights and a crying baby b/c we tried for so long for our son, and then he was born so early. I was thankful. And I know you are too. Congratulations!!

Cherish every moment, even the sleepless, crying baby ones. They go by very quickly. It seems like only yesterday that I brought my sweet baby girl home. She will soon be 18 and just left with her boyfriend who steals her from us as much as he can. Moms are so great, makes you really appreciate her now. Love and prayers to you.

My daughter was also in the NICU for 3 weeks & the same thing happened to us. In the NICU, she never cried. As soon as we left the hospital, she let us know what she was capable of!

I second the commenter's advice who suggested the Miracle Blanket. Also, a similar product called "Snuggle Me". They both swaddle the baby really well & give them a sense of security.

I have been praying and will continue to as you guys adjust to being home! It is REALLY hard at first, but it will get better! Harper looks so cute in her swing and bouncer!!! My mom stayed with us when we brought Connor home and was the same way...I couldn't have done it without her and cried my eyes out when she left. (She came back a week later for a couple more weeks!!!) Love you friend!

Welcome Home! I totally agree with the commenters saying to get the miracle blanket, the snuggle me, and the swaddle me. I think it will help. Also as she takes in her new surroundings and becomes more comfortable she'll relax. She was a big baby and she is playing catch up with all that eating!! God Bless her! My son was born healthy but I found around 8 weeks he really relaxed alot and cried so much less.

She is a beauty for sure!

So NORMAL for 1st time mommies to get their precious bundles (who were perfect angels in the hospital) home and then baby gets all settled and comfey, and lets you know who she really is! It's wonderful and exhausting at the same time! If she's feisty like this, then you know all is well and she's healthy and NORMAL!!! She's an angel!

Congrats on getting her home! Don't forget that she was in a noisy womb for 9 months and in a noisy hospital for 3 weeks, so keeping some noise going around the house will help her feel right at home. A loud fan worked wonders for our first baby. You can also buy cd's with nothing but white noise on them. Good luck! She is beautiful! What did she think of her adorable nursery?

There are a lot of great helpful hints here. You will soon learn what works for Harper and you. Don't hesitate to let her sleep wherever she sleeps best. My son slept at night in the bouncy for the first 3 weeks. It is the only way I got 2 - 3 hrs at a time. We went through lots of batteries but it was well worth it. We will pray she settles in quickly. My baby was in NICU too and the noise factor does play a big role. Just keep praying and loving.

Ooooh, the three week growth spurt! I remember it well. (Of course, it was only 15 weeks ago!) Take heart in that this too shall pass. By 12 weeks my little man was sleeping 5-8 hour stretches at night.

I am so glad that you are finally home and settling in. Having a baby at home changes your whole environment--for the better! Have fun with that sweet baby and start a "Mommy journal" about your baby because you think that you will remeber the little things forever, but sleep deprivation sets in and things run together!

Anonymous said...

Now the fun begins! Even when they are screaming and hungry, there just isn't anything like life at home with a newborn, especially one as cute as Harper. I know all the books say rest when you can, but they're right. And isn't it wonderful to have this normal slice of life? You came so close to not having it. I'm so very thankful that Harper is with you, even if she's crying. Hugs to you all and God bless.

zanesmommy said...

So wonderful that you are home. Just a little note about the crying and not getting enough to eat. She is probably getting ready for a growth spurt and the fact that she is now working for her food instead of having it given to her by a tub. It makes for hungry baby. Enjoy every bit of that beautiful little angel!

Awwww...she is so precious...I know you are going to get lots of advice...but here is my 2 cents worth...when I brought my son Cade home from the hospital 7 yrs ago, the nurses kept telling me before we left how perfect he was how well he slept. We got that sweet boy home and all he did was cry and want to nurse...As soon as I put him in his crib he would sleep for 10 mins (maybe) and then scream (I had to keep reminding my self that for 5 yrs I prayed for this child and how long it took to get pregnant lol). He didn't like his crib, after being in the hospital tiny basinett, that also was positioned at any angle taht is what he liked. I put him in his swing or stroller and he slept like an angel...So for 3 weeks he slept in his stroller...morning noon and night. Also she could be going thru a growth spurt and finally really getting her appetite...Hope that helps you!

Congratulations on having Harper home, Kelly! I've been praying for you guys! I dont know if you've seen it or not, but there's a DVD called "The Happiest Baby on the Block" that tells ways to calm babies and help them sleep better. The best is swaddling... Both my babies loved it! It makes sense, they are so cramped and tight when they are in our tummys, and being swaddled tight is secure and safe to them...The Dr. on the movie is kind of strange, but his
"5 S's" strategies REALLY work! (they did for us, at least)...anyway, wanted to pass that along! Congrats, again! I cant wait to keep up with all of Harper's big milestones!

I'm not sure if you are able to read all your comments but WELCOME HOME! I'm so happy for y'all. harper is right on track! Newborns sleep the days & nights away the first few weeks & then...all of a sudden, they discover, lungs!!! Both my 2 big 9 pound babies did the same thing. They are just hungry!! Or they want to be held. It's kind of neat when they "wake up" from what we called the "newborn haze"
Enjoy every minute!!

Why is it that babies act so sleepy and happy in the hospital, then they wake up as soon as they are brought through the doors of their own home!?!?! :) Both of ours did that, and I fully expect C to do it, too! You're so right though--what a blessing to have a baby that can cry and wants to eat!

Hey Kelly - I am one of your new followers who has been praying for your gorgeous baby and am so glad to see you all home where you belong. If it's any consolation to you, my little girl did the same thing around three/four weeks and again around six/seven - it seemed like a growth spurt when she just got hungrier. I used to feel like I fed her all day, but it did pass. Also, she is adjusting (as are you) to different routines and environment. Remember, you have no staff support, so you are bound to feel overwhelmed at times. Just go with the flow, get all the help you can get (and take it) and rest when you can. It will all come together. You have all been through so much and need to take care of you too. I am praying for you guys every day and wishing for many beautiful moments to come.

God bless you and your family!

Hang in there, Kelly! Sometimes that transition of bringing baby home can be hard, but it goes by so quickly! She looks so beautiful, too. Sometimes if they cry and cry and cry and don't want anything, they really just want to be put down and left alone. Don't feel bad if that happens, they get overstimulated just like we do. You're doing a great job!

P.S. One trick I learned with my 3rd baby- when she is nursing, pull her little chin down after she latches on, making sure that she is on well. When you have one that wants to eat all day long, you can get very sore very quickly. This helped eliminate that for me!

Harper is so cute in that pink and brown outfit!

And I'm trying to figure out from the picture what your mom made. It looks good.

Katy said...

Very glad to hear it's going well. Don't worry about her wanting to eat all of the time, I swear my babies were pretty much wanting to nurse about every hour...sometimes every 30 min. It goes by so fast. Give that sweetheart some good kisses.

Anonymous said...

So glad to hear that things are going well (except for being tired). Little Harper just wants to cuddle with mommy and make up for the times when she couldn't in the past three weeks. Take advantage of it. Soon she will be crawling all over the floor and to busy to stop and cuddle.:)I'll be praying for a more peaceful night tonight.

Oh, how happy and joyful I am to finally see you at your own home with the blessing of Harper Brown Stamps! In January, I was so excited for her arrival, that when it came time for delivery, and with the surprise, which only the Lord knew about, I could not wait for all the January posts that preceeded with you, in your p.j.'s talking all about being a new mommy. Well, here it is...February, and now you finally get to be in P.J.'s for the entire month! PTL!!! May the Lord bless you and keep you...in this month...and for the many, many months to come, as you are filled with the JOY of the LORD and HIS promises of HIS WORD, to have this little darling, HBS, in your presence. Have the time of your life!!!!

Love you...and I have not even met you.

Hang in there girl! That is a big baby girl you have and she is going to want to eat a lot - now that she has Mama's milk all to herself - and no tubes. She will settle in. Meanwhile, get you a comfy spot and sit down and feed her! There will be plenty of time for housework and such later!! Enjoy, enjoy having her home!! Blessings!!

Awww...a typical day home with your sweet baby. As far as the crying, my mom used to always remind me of something her sister (my dearly departed aunt) used to always say: If a baby doesn't cry, there's something wrong with it. I know you all are loving being home together. God bless Grandma for staying and helping you settle in. Hugs to you all!

Congrats on bringing your sweet baby girl home!!! I have been following your blog for a bit over a month now. I agree with the above comments...The Miracle Blanket is no joke. We used it for almost 6 months with our daughter and it was amazing!!! It works like a charm and ensures a better night of sleep for you, your hubby and sweet Harper. Oh and our little Tyler Grace slept in her swing for the first 6 weeks we were home. Just do what works for Harper.

Congrats again, welcome home and enjoy every single moment!!! I know you've heard it a thousand times but it really does go quickly. My baby is 17 months and I still vividly remember the day we brought her home!

Welcome Home, Harper!

Just a suggestion on a wonderful book for the fussy first few weeks - Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp. Basis is that babies need 12 more weeks to fully develop ( a 4th trimester) so in those weeks, try to mimic to womb...swaddle snugly, make shushing noises, sway/swing her, let her suck on a paci (has she tried this? she could be soothing on your breast instead), and place her on her side to calm her down ...always when supervising.
Anyway, I thought those tricks worked...my 1st born was super fussy at week 5-6. Good luck and ENJOY your precious bundle. She is so alert and adorable...hardly looks like a newborn at all!

Anonymous said...

Also - the Aden & Anais muslin swaddling blankets are so wonderful too...big squares of the softest cotten. babycenter and Land of nod both sell them. I also agree with keeping a fan on in her room...she is most definitely used to LOUD surroundings. And running a fan in the nursery is always a good idea, according to recent research...it decreases the chances of sids by 75%.

Kelly ~ How exciting to see pictures of Harper AT HOME! Rejoicing with you! And so thankful that you have your mom there, too. Don't know what I would do without my mom's help after each of my kids were born.

What you wrote sounded so familiar to me. When we were in the hospital with our first, Hannah, Josh told the nurse, "She is such a good baby. She hardly cries at all." The nurse looked at him like, "Just wait." Sure enough...AS SOON as we got home, that 'never cries baby' let us know what it was really like to have a newborn.

I know that you are cherishing every minute. We are so happy for you & Scott!

We come home and she was up all night! It gets better though promise. Eventually 5 hours of consecutive sleep is wonderful! God bless! She is beautiful.

We also couldn't believe our daughter who didn't make a peep in the hospital kept us up ALL night the first night home. I guess it doesn't matter whether you bring them home on day 2 or day 21, they have to show you who is boss! You both will get into your groove eventually. Much love to your precious family. You stood firm in your testimony for Him and let His glory shine thru. Well done. I am amazed at the connections of my other friends who heard about Harper. A friend who lived in Ankara and is now in Texas had a blog friend who came to see you in the hospital. The Christian circle really is small. Well, she is just a doll. We've all fallen in love with her! I've had a baby or two that turned into a Jekyl and Hyde when we got home from the hospital. She'll settle down soon when she finds a new routine. What a darling wreath! That is such a fun idea to announce that baby is HERE! Don't worry - Harper will get her routine down soon. I'm sure you've had plenty of advice but I'll go ahead and add my 2 cents. Sounds like she's having a growth spurt. That means she wants to eat constantly. It's a good thing. For her and for your milk supply. BUT (and this is coming from a woman on her 4th infant) it's ok to let someone else give her a bottle while you get some sleep or a good cry. Or both. = ) You are in survival mode now. The first 6 weeks are the hardest. I promise it will get easier!! :) Unsolicited advice finished.

Angela said...

It's funny normally they are great in the hospital and the first night home is the worst!!! It will get better! At least that is how it was with both of my boys! I think they have to get used to new surroundings and a new routine but that is just my view!

Take a peek over at my blog, Kelly. My grand-daughter was born on January 10th and I flew to help my daughter for a week...they have two german sheppies who adapted well to baby. I blogged about it.

It will take a week or so for a new schedule to take hold for all of you, but it will happen. Nursing often will build your milk supply (which is a good thing!)

Settle in momma. Its all good!

So glad you have your baby girl home! It is definitely a challenge getting into a routine with a newborn! My little girl was up 24/7 when we brought her home and only slept if we were holding her! It wears on you, for sure. I found that making a big distinction between day and night time (lowering lights, turning off TV and lowering voices, etc.) helped a lot. It calmed her down. Also, use a sound machine to help her sleep! It's just an adjustment for everyone involved. And like many others said, it will go too fast, so remind yourself of that when you are worn down. Congrats again!! :)

Welcome home Harper! I'll ditto a previous commenter: the activity, appetite, and new found attitude are all God's way of showing you she is perfectly normal. Though she'll be 100% uniquely Harper in personality and looks in no time. Yes, the sleepless nights are hard (working on 23 weeks of them here), but so worth it to have your precious baby healthy and happy and close. Wishing you continued blessings!

I am so happy to see you are home!

As far as where did your sleeping quiet baby girl go, NO you didnt leave that personality at the NICU. I was a NICU nurse for 13 years and have heard this same thing from many parents. It seems its just too quiet at home- the thing you were wanting the peace and quiet of your home, is sometimes too quiet for the baby that has spent some time in there. They tried music in their room or a small tv on quietly. Some used the background noise of a box type fan, some even used those sound machines! I thought I would pass on what some other NICU parents have used in the years past, hopefully you will find something to help you.

I am so happy to hear she is wanting to eat so much! She is beautiful.

How wonderful that your mom is able to stay with you! What a blessing.

Hang in there with the on-demand nursings. It is so trying and tiring at first, but after a bit she'll settle into a schedule and rhythm and you'll be so happy you stuck it out. But I remember how crazy it is at first - you literally feel like you are starting a nursing session as soon as you've ended one.

Oh do I remember the day we brought our boys home.I always thought that it was very bright at the hospital and very noisy. They were hooked to so many monitors and they always were making noise. Levi didn't like the night at all and I often wondered if it was because I had his room too dark? They go through so much when they start off needing so much help that I feel they are finally letting go and making there way and to let us know they are okay! Kelly, I will echo the others and say that a new baby that cries to be held or nurse constantly is very normal, and the time goes by very quickly! Really, it does! My advice to new mothers is to hold, rock, sway, bounce, nurse, etc. your precious baby. Let her sleep in the swing, bouncy seat, a snugli, her carseat, whereever! Just enjoy this time!

Kelly- I've been following your blog since Harper was born (from the link Amanda put on Baby Bangs asking for prayer for you)but this is my first "comment". I have been SO blessed to pray for Harper and you and Scott throughout her remarkable recovery and have praised God for every wonderful answer to prayer. I have oohed and aahed over every picture of your incredibly gorgeous daughter (and when she was critical, ran to my computer first thing every morning to see if there were any updates). You did such a great job keeping us informed! You did an even greater job of displaying what genuine trust in God looks like in a believer! I have come to love your dad's blog almost as much as yours (I guess because I'm nearer your parent's age - GRIN). I know your mom and dad must be SO proud of you.

May I say, WAY TO GO, Nonny. You're the best kind of grandmother. You are taking care of the chores so your daughter and son-in-law can take care of their baby. I KNEW you'd have that kind of wisdom!

Unending blessings to you all!

Ms. Elaine said...

I have watched Harper's progess by linking to you from another blog. My husband is from Arkansas so I felt an immediate attachment. If you haven't figured out already, sometimes a nursed baby will be hungry all day one day. There is nothing to worry about they are just needing to increase your milk supply. Make sure you are getting rest and plenty of fluids. This happens around 4 weeks and then at 6 weeks and if I remember it will happen about 3 months. Remember as you start feeling better you forget to rest! It is great to see all is well and you are home.
