Mama's Got a Brand New Bag

So thanks for all of your answers on yesterday's survey. I'm always interested to hear from other moms and what is going on! I was shocked and amazed to realize that almost all of you put your babies in their rooms right away!!!! You might encourage me to do it a little earlier. She really is sleeping good these days and I hate to have her move away from me. I was thinking I would just keep her in there until she is ready for college. ha! But maybe we will go for 5 months??? That's just around the corner.
I've also nixed the idea of the jumperoo. I know most of you like it - but I really don't want another big thing around the house and I know my baby - she just wants her momma or a walk in her stroller. And you know what - I'm okay with that. ha!

I told ya'll I would share my diaper bags with you. I think this is kind of fun. I had looked at and dreamed of all kinds of diaper bags before I got pregnant - not thinking anyone would give me one. I was given several and I love them all - I switch them out all the time. This pink and brown one was made by a lady in my parent's church - I think it's just adorable.
A sweet girl in my church, Sammy, made me this one. She makes diaper bags and sells them - if you are interested you could let me know! (when I put my e-mail back up - ha!) I think it's so cute! She also works in the nursery so I know she will be loving on my Harper!
I got this bag in the hospital along with a whole bunch of monogrammed gifts. I am TOTALLY embarrassed because I have not figured out how to send a thank you for this. I didn't have an address - just a web site and I wasn't sure if the web site made the gifts that these 2 sweet ladies sent me or if it was actually their site. So Aimee Bolton and Stephanie Herman - thank you SOOOOOOO much. I would love to send you an actual thank you (and an apology for the ridiculous lateness of it) if you would like to send me your addresses or leave your e-mails on this post.
(There may be a few more out there who somehow never got my thank yous - if you never heard from me - please let me know. We were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO blessed by so many of you at the hospital and I don't have to tell you that I was pretty scatterbrained during that time so it would have been easy for me to mess up).
A sweet girl, Andrea, from my parent's church made me this Razorback bag. I don't have to tell you how much I love it. Even though Harper will most likely NOT be making her Razorback debut at the football games this year - I will still carry this bag during football season!
(I don't have to explain why taking an 8 month old baby to a hot, loud, crowded, 4 hour football game is a horrible idea (for us at least)) ha!
And my Aunt Linda gave me this Buddha bag for my birthday and I absolutely LOVE it. It's so big and roomy that on days where I want to be a little more stylish - I just stuff diapers and wipes and bibs and burp cloths in it and it doubles as a diaper bag! ha! I was also given SEVERAL other small bags (mostly monogrammed) that I don't use for diaper bags but I have kinds of other uses for them!
I had to show ya'll this. On the tour of homes - it became very apparent to me how Plain Jane my guest room is so I decided to frame a picture of Harper to hang over the bed. After all - our only guests are her grandparents so they will appreciate it. I love huge chunky gold frames and I thought this picture came out awesome in black and white (I took it!!). We got it done today (while frames were 1/2 off). Now I just have to get Scott to hang it for me. I'll show a picture once it's hung! (It's 16 x 20 - big! I had it printed on-line at www.winkflash.com)
And here is the little monkey girl.......I swear she is about ready to start crawling. She really tries. I also think her hair almost looks blond in this picture - we think all her new hair coming in (what little there is) is blond. She is SO her daddy's daughter.

Who likes Gilmore Girls?? For 2 years I have been DVR'ing that show every day (the re-runs) and I've watched the first 6 seasons twice now. And today they are finally beginning the 7th season and I'm so excited. I've been wondering what happened. (I never watched the show on the original go around).

The 7th season of GG was pretty good. I had never watched until 5 years ago when I switched jobs and began working from home. I got caught up in the re-runs and had to start watching the current episodes.

I love the picture in the gold frame.

Love the bags, love the new photo, love the pic of your wanting-to-crawl-so-bad monkey! Oh, and I'm totally a Gilmore Girl! My hubby thought that watching it made me dumb....he would always say "Quick, what's 2 + 2?" Silly boy!!!

That is a beautiful picture of Harper that you took for the guest room!!!

Your office tours inspired me to START TRYING to de-junk our office. There's NO way I could have posted a picture of it. Most of it is Lane's stuff, so am (patiently) waiting for him to get in the mood to clean and organize (good luck to me on that one). But at least I started. I only had a chance to look at a few of the offices, but both yours and your Mom's made me want to make ours into a pleasant space to work in! :)

Your diaper bags are all so cute! (Just curious, is "Andrea" Bryan B's wife Andrea??? I think she sews, but I'm not sure. Just wondering!) :) So many cute ideas!

I have every season of Gilmore Girls on DVD and when we had expanded cable (cut it out a few months ago when we moved), I still watched the re-runs whenever they were on. I love the show and absolutely love Lorelai :)

I LOVE that picture of Harper in that frame! It is gorgeous!
And I missed the survey....but I didn't move Connor to his room until 3 months...and Avery Kate may stay in our room forever!! :)
It's a sweet time and it is sad to have them move across the house! I know it has to happen, but I say do it whenever you want to and don't feel rushed!

I got into Gilmore Girls in the last 2 years of the show and I still watch the re-runs. The 7th season is good but it is a little disappointing. They were not sure if the show would continue beyond the 7th season during the taping so I think that shows. But, you'll still love most of it, enjoy!

I have all the seasons of GG on DVD and they light up my life :) They're my go-to "cheer me up" thing to slide into the DVD player on a lousy day. You just can't watch that show and stay down!

Harper is getting so big!!! On the whole room thing, I know I said I put MY kids in their own room at 8 weeks because we slept better that way, but do what works for you! I say, don't mess with a good thing, and if she's sleeping well and everyone's happy just keep her where she is :) Cute bags! I'm partial to the Hogs one myself :)

Hey Kelly,
Just wanted to say your precious baby girl is adorable! She seems to get even cuter every.single.day! How is that even possible?!?!

And... GILMORE GIRLS IS THE BEST! When, if God so provides, I have children, I SOOO want to be a Lorelai. She loves loves loves her daughter, and is not afraid to share her mistakes... besides some of the things she overlooks, and her obvious lack of the God-fearing attitude we should all possess... I think you are going to be just like her! Only better! Because you would NOT overlook the things Lorelai does, and you DO have an incredible passion for Our Sweet Jesus. WAY TO GO! I'm So excited to see you and Harper's relationship play out... so exciting! :)

I love the Gilmore Girls!!

Anyways, just wanted to say that I'm glad you decided against the jumparoo. Today in class, we read research that supports tummy time for babies around Harper's age. A jumparoo would develop her leg muscles before she was ready to use them, and encourage early walking. She needs to have the tummy time to strengthen the core muscles. Just trying to help, not sound preachy.

Harper's so adorable and you have such a beautiful family.

That picture turned out SO good. HOw big is it and where did you take it to have it blown up??? I have a ton of Addies to get done but need good quality b.c I want some big ones!

I love Gilmore Girls, and am insisting that we bring them on DVD with us as my husband and I move overseas! My favorite thing about the show, is how realistic the characters are, and how they grow and change with time!

marawolff.com said...

Don't worry about the sleeping arrangements, go with your mommy instinct. That will always be what is best for Harper.

Also, I agree with all the big bulky baby gear. Our daughter loved the bouncer that hangs from a doorway at the age. It was perfect for a change of pace and strengthening her leg muscles.

Just wondering-you have said that Harper is kind of high maintenance, and that she really likes to be held a lot. Have you ever heard of a Moby wrap? It was absolutely a life saver for me. I wore my little girl (she is almost one) around the house, shopping, and everywhere when she was H's age. I was able to clean house, cook (just not over the stove), walk, etc. with her in it. They are pretty pricey to buy, but you can make one yourself-just buy six yards of jersey fabric and cut it in half long ways (it is too wide), then you have two. Then go to this website :http://www.peppermint.com/moby-wrap-instructions.html for instructions for wearing her. I still my little girl now, when it is more convenient than the stroller. They can ride until they hit 35 lbs, and you can carry them a zillion different ways. This is totally just a suggestion, just thought it might help. :)

Kelly,
Love the bags! So cute. :) All of them.

I LOVE Gilmore Girls. Love it. I have all seasons on dvd. Since you didn't want season 7 in "real" time, keep an open mind when you watch it. When the 7th season was filmed, the cast themselves didn't know if there would be a season 8. (There were big negotiations on contracts and the WB wanting Gilmore Girls around for another season) SOOOooo....they filmed season 7 finale, which also ended up being the series finale.

So I feel like they could have ended the whole series better but overall it was okay. I felt like I wanted more.

Don't get me wrong, I still love it.

Hope I didn't confuse you. Can't wait to hear what you think of it! :)

I am not a child expert what so ever but you mentioned that Harper would be having surgery on her foot at 6 months so you may want to hold off on putting her in her own bed until after her surgery. You seem to be as tender hearted as I am and you will want to baby her like crazy after her procedure and will want to watch her 24-7 and I would hate to see you have "re-train" her after she recovers. Just a thought. Again I am no expert and a mother of one so I maybe totally off. :) Harper is precious!!!

I must be in the minority because my daughter slept in our room until she was 6 months old. There was no reason for it because she slept through the night from 6 wks but I loved to hear her little grunts and baby noises and hear her cooing when she woke up in the morning and peep at her and see her smiling face. I wouldnt change that time for anything.

My son didnt sleep through the night until 15 months and I kept him in with us for longer than 6 mos because I didnt want to have to keep traipsing across the house to him because I was sooo tired already!!

Each to their own. If everyone's happy still then I would do what feels right to you. These are precious times, they grow up so fast dont feel you have to rush :o)

How's your Crystal Light diet going???

LOVE LOVE LOVE GG! I finally got my hubby hooked on them too.

first of all, i loved gilmore girls and miss that show!! every now and then i could even get my husband to watch it with me :)

second, i loved having my babies in my room with me. they slept right next to my bed and i loved watching them sleep and being right there...both of mine slept through the night early and i still liked having them close. we finally moved them out when my husband got tired of watching movies with me in bed on closed captioning :) both of my kids were ready to move to their own rooms, but i cried...

and while i loved my jumper, i don't know from the way you have described harper that she would be into it, and you're right...they make the biggest toys for such little babies!! the one thing i loved was putting the jumper in my bathroom doorway so the kids could jump while i put my makeup on. other than that, it basically was just another big toy to store and it scratched up the top of our door frame.

AAAAHHHH GILMORE GIRLS! :-) My step-daughter and I bought the DVD set of every season and we have watched every episode I don't know how many times. We are praying for an update movie or something. And I sing the theme song to my baby Belle and she thinks I'm crazy! :-)

Have you ever used a sling? Although Pip loves his saucer he too loves to be held by mama. I don't know what I'd do without my sling. You've never mentioned one so I was wondering if you've tried them. We have both the moby wrap and a ring sling. I love them both but the moby is better for longer periods of time.

Good 'ol Gilmore Girls! I have seen all of them, and watched them all while they were on. The 7th season is especially special to me, not so much because I adored the story line (b/c frankly, I didn't love all the choices the writers made), but a good friend of mine and I started having a "date" every Tuesday. We would watch GG and than talk for hours afterwards. It was so great. We still miss that weekly Mom date SO much!

Harper is SO cute. Good job on taking that B&W photo that you framed - totally adorable!

Riley moved into his crib around 5 months, I think. He mostly slept in bed with us until then. My husband was ready to be done with that though! :) I have the monitor right by his bed though, and the other one right by me, so at any time I can listen to his breathing pattern. :)

I had an exersaucer (similar to a jumperoo) for my daughter, and she did love it, but with Riley we didn't/don't have either, and he's fine! I appreciate not having another giant thing to take up room too.

Cute diaper bags!

I LOVE the black and white photo! Such a good idea to have in your guest room. And I'm so jealous of all your bags. We have a generic Eddie Bauer bag from Target. I love that it has room for so much, but it's still so plain. I have nothing personalized except one little blanket. Maybe some day!!

I can see her room from my bed, but it still seems so far. I still get up and check on her 2-3 times a night. I know what you're going through. I lay my hand on her each night and pray for God's protection on my sweet girl. Good luck with the "move" whenever you decide to do it.

Kelly I just watched episode 1. I'm so excited to FINALLY be seeing the end. I sort of know what happens in the end, but none of the 'in between.'
And don't feel a bit bad about wanting to keep your baby with you. As you know, I am not one who believes you start teaching them independence as soon as they are out of the womb. It is not independent babies we need to strive for... it is when they are older and with people who are NOT their momma that we need them to be confident, secure, and independent little people. And THAT I can say with assurance of all of mine.
Above all, you do what your heart says, regardless of all the advice (including mine, except that one. ha).

I was going to suggest to you ...not sure if they still sell them but you can buy those jolly jumpers that hang from a door frame...They take up literally no room...and my kids LOVED IT. I had bought the rainforest jumperoo for my youngest and he could have cared less- he was much more interested in the Jolly Jumper.which was 1/8 the price. Figure that.lol. And Im thinking they were about 5 months old when I started putting them in there. And better late than never...I kept my oldest in his own room from about a week old... the middle boy was in his room by a couple months old... and my youngest slept with us for about 6 months....Its soooo much easier on Mamma that way!Good luck on whatever you try!

Love the framed picture! I'm sure it will look amazing!

I am a GG lover through and through. Whenever a rerun is on I make sure to watch it. I hope to be blessed with a daughter some day and hope to have the same sort of mother daughter relationship.

NOT that you need another bag :) But I will be hosting a Thirty One online party soon and I'd love to invite you, if you are interested! They have the cutest items and are SO SO cheap. Look over at my blog and check out the cute things they have...and of course EVERYTHING can be monogrammed. I am in SO much trouble because I want EVERYTHING :)

Just discovered you thru 2nd Time Around...I want to join the 'Show us where you live' meme.
What a sweet family you have and I look forward to reading more about your world. I caught a word as I was scanning down your page...infertility, I rode that train for 12 years until our Samuel--ask of the Lord--arrived. I'm sure we could talk for hours about that journey and what the Lord taught us along the way.

Got to run but I'll be back.

I know you reach alot of people through your site and maybe this is not the place to ask for prayers but there is a family whose little girl was hit by a drunk driver while playing in their front yard. She has overcome so much so far but also has a long road ahead.

My sister and I have been HUGE GG fans since the beginning. I had the first 6 seasons on DVD, and then your fav. store Wal-Mart had S7 on sale for 14.99 at Christmas. I had it in my hand and was purchasing it before my MIL could turn around to see what the fuss was about ; )

And, if you are as hooked as we are, Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello (sp?) does hold out hope for creator Amy Sherman-Palladino to do a TV movie so that the series ends the way she imagined it would when she was still running the show. Yep, a true GG stalker here.

I was suprised to read you won't be getting a jumper....I predict you will try one out at a friend's house and cave in. They really do benefit from varying stimulating activites and works on those leg muscles. I agree with no more big things around the house...just wait...the baby doll strollers, play kitchens, ride on toys...it will all be coming soon.

Such a great picture you took of Miss Harper!

Your bags are so cute! I am jealous, my diaper bag is literally falling apart and I just have the one! I wish I had thought to look into monogrammed stuff when I was pregnant with my daughter. She has a pink stuffed elephant with her name on the ear but that's about it!

Well, I've never been a Gilmore Girls fan but I agree, it's the best watching shows after they're already on DVD!

I was a HUGE Gilmore Girls nut... I loved that show... I blubbered like a baby during the last show. It was weird - I've never reacted like that to the end of a show or movie, but I just sobbed and sobbed...and I don't think that it was even sad - I was just so overwhelmed that the story was ending.

I love the Gilmore Girls! I cried like a baby when the show ended. You will love season 7. I am holding out hope for a movie someday! I have all of the DVD's of all the seasons and I watch them a lot! So much so I thought about packing them and putting them away because I realized Lorelai is not a real person! HA! ENJOY!

Hey! Well, we put Asher in his room the day we got back from the hospital, and at bedtime it's been in the crib, lights out, door closed. He hasn't complained, and Hayden hooked up the video baby monitor to the ceiling, so we can see what he's doing all the time. I love looking at the monitor and seeing that he's flipped over on his back and it just laying in his crib, watching his mobile, and just enjoying his little self :) I'm sure Harper will do fine!

I'm so jealous of the Razorbacks bag! I need a Bama one for this fall!!!

Love the picture! Your home your home tour has gotten me motivated as well. We moved six months ago and have been remodeling, ugh! But now I'm ready to start hanging things on the wall. I didn't comment on sleep because people think we're nuts! Our kiddos slept with us or in our room for over a year, four of them! (not at the same time:))We never had issues transitioning them. I say to each his own when it comes to sleeping arrangements. You know what works for you and your family. Harper maybe ready to move at five months, it may be eight months. You can't really pick a date, it will just seem like the right time when it gets here. Love the bags! My husband is a little tired of my bag obsession! ;)

Gilmore Girls...oh how I love that show! I have all 7 seasons on DVD and have watched all about 6 times in the last two years. Living on my own, I use GG as "background noise." I've watched them so much I know exactly what's happening so I can walk in and out of the room, catch up on email, even talk on the phone and not feel the need to "rewind." They are my constant home companions! You know, having real people talking as opposed to playing just music is so much nicer. I am starting to think it's time I get another show on DVD though, so GG can get a break! Love the huge photo of Harper!

And I left all three of my kids in my room until 8 months old. I would have left them longer if my husband hadn't pushed me to move them.
God Bless you! I love your blog.

I know you said "no", but the jumperoo is a mommy must. It was the best $60 buck I have ever spent in my life. That was the only break I got in a day to put him down, other wise he had to be held 24/7. Even if he only sat in it for 10minutes, that was time I could use both my hands at once... a 10minute break to a mommy, is like an hour to anyone else. It strengthened his back and legs for walking and crawling. The person who invented the jumperoo is truely heaven sent!!! However, everyone always has an opinion, I've learned to tell people that, "I do what works." If keeping Harper in your room is working for you, so be it. My child ate ice cream at 4am, sometimes you just do what works rather it is right or wrong.

By the way, I missed your Sunday survey, but let me just encourage you that you'll know what is best for Harper regarding her bed. If you aren't ready, and she's sleeping pretty good anyway, then keep her in your room for a bit longer.
I kept both my babies in our room until around six-seven months. Of course, they still like to come in our room some nights(they are now almost 3 and 19 months)...and you know, I am pretty ok with that. (My husband may beg to differ, but I think he secretly doesn't mind most nights.) They won't be small for very long.
Someone may have already told you this - just know that I get what you are saying, and we've all been there and it's ok...do what works for you.

I love the bags and the picture!!! So precious!!!

I tried to put a comment up yesterday, but my computer freaked out in the middle and I didn't have time to rewrite it, but I thought I'd try and encourage you today. I kept my son in our room until he was about 6 months old because his room was across the house and I didn't like it being so far (just like you guys). My husband would have liked to move him long before, but we all survived just fine. :-) To help ease my mind we got a video monitor and it is so great! You may have one already, but if you do I missed that post. :-) I have to warn you it's a bit addictive, but it totally helps you with the transition. My son did fine with the bedroom transition, and thanks to the video monitor, so did I. :-) He's a very light sleeper so peeking in is not the best option for us. With the monitor I can check on him until my heart is content to make sure his blankets aren't over his face before I go to bed, see what he's doing when I hear him kicking around in the morning, etc. without running the risk of disturbing him. I hope this helps! :-)

Okay so this is totally unrelated to your post today but I just found your blog yesterday and have been spending the last 24 hours reading all your old posts. I struggled with infertility for 7 years and now have two beautiful children. A 5 yr old girl and a 3 1 /2 yr old boy. God is sooooo good.
The other thing we have in common is that when my little boy was born he spent 12 days in the NICU due to a pneumothorax (tear in his lung) and double pneumonia. Reading your story has brought back so many memories. And again I have to say God is soooooo Good!
I Love Harper she is a sweet pea, but I gotta tell you if I don't start getting some work done instead of reading this thing I am gonna be in a ton of trouble. HA!

Kelly, Harper is such a doll! I love seeing her pictures :) My baby is 9 months old this week and for some reason, Harper reminds me of my Sadie a little bit, when you post things about her.

As for the rooms/sleeping...Sadie still sleeps in our room! She is now in a crib in our room, but all my babies have slept with us, then in our rooms until 12ish months. A lot longer than many people do it, but it's okay! I will actually pull her into bed with me at night some nights just because I miss her (and she's only a few feet away! c'mon!) but she's sleeping better in her bed now than with me and my husband. But she's my baby, and I just like being close to her...my other kids are 6, 4 & 2, and they all sleep fine on their own, although a few random nights/month one of the middle 2 will come in and sleep with us for whatever reason. My oldest never does, and I miss him doing it, as you know, they grow too fast! So do what you want, sleep with her in your room until you're ready to move her.

As for the jumperoo, we've never had one. We did have a johnny-jump-up, and some of my babies liked it, others didn't. Baby gear gets used for such a short amount of time anyway, put your money toward something else! Like more cute clothes...My baby right now hates to be contained in anything, which gets a little tricky when we're outside because she likes to eat anything she can, but inside I put some gates up and let her go wherever she wants.

You are an awesome mama, and I love reading about your updates in my down time, which is usually late late at night! From a mama up here in alaska :)

I love all those bags! I find out tomorrow if we are having ANOTHER boy or if God has blessed us with a baby girl! I can't wait!!! I know I will really become a shop-a-holic if it's a girl! :) And the last pic of Harper is so cute - you can see her little toofies in her mouth! Love it!

Love the bags and the picture. What a great idea! by the way, those little monogrammed bags will be perfect for Harper to carry panties in when she is a 'big girl' and potty training. You probably don't want to think about that right now. Just a thought for one day.

Michelle Cearley said...

You might want to revisit the jumperoo idea once Harper is mobile and rolling or crawling. Then, you will never get anything done unless she is "contained." My daughter didn't start liking hers until she was 6-7 months old, and then she loved, loved it until she was around 16 months old. She was done with the exersaucer by 9 months and the swing by 10 months, so that freed up lots of space with the larger equipment. All I had left in the house was the jumperoo. I've loved the Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo which is freestanding with lights/music/toys.

My little boy started sleeping in the nursery at 4 months and to my shock, he sleeps so much better in a room by himself. I agree with the bulky jumper...but I will say there is one that securly attaches to a door frame and he LOVED it!!! And it's really good for making their legs strong. Plus, you can take it with you when you travel and it works wonder when you want to take a bath and they need to be occupied, you can just hang it in the bathroom.

never bought jumperoos - I just didn't think they looked safe (I have 3 little ones)

and my kids have slept with us / for a long time - until they are toddlers - we co-sleep - my little one is going to be 3 here in a couple of weeks and we just bought her a bed last week. My 5 year old starts out in her room and ends up in our bed each night or the toddler bed - which is next to my side of the bed in our room. My son, 7, still asks to sleep with us and LOVES to, but he pretty much has been on his own for the past year.

Our theory on this sleeping thing is this: the children are young / little for such a short time - I have the rest of my life to sleep, they will only be this small and wanting me for just this small space of time. I can deal with this!!

Plus, I just dont' sleep very well if my kids are not in my room!!

kelly - I nursed my baby girl - in my bed from day one - it was just so easy. she nursed all night long and i slept with my top off. tmi i know, but you do what you want and not worry about it. my baby slept with me until she was 12!!! we used to have so much fun just laying in bed, talking late at night. she is an only child and she just wanted to be me and her day and the dogs instead of being alone. she eventually decided she wanted to be in her own room- on her own, on her own time. she is now 18 and is the most independent girl, totally mature, and totally close to me and her dad. there's nothing wrong with sleeping together - it can be wonderful if that is what your child needs. mine did. she never cried, she never had to worry about me not being there for her. this made her independent instead of needy. a needy child is one who can't depend on her parents. my child knew we were always always always there for her. good luck. she's an absolute doll. and also - she was an in vitro baby - God's miracle - and I was 37 when she was born!
