Two Weeks Old and Moving on UP!

Guess who is TWO weeks old today???? This girl!!!

We've been on a little bit of a roller coaster today. Harper is totally off of her meds and IV's but she started having some withdrawl from her pain meds. Our doctor warned us a week ago when this happened she would be irritable. Well - he was right and she's had a tough day. She was pretty mad most of the day. Mommy holding her seemed to help a lot but she would still get upset. She also has been breathing a little hard so they had to put a tube in her nose to feed her. She is getting my milk so that's the good thing - it's just hard to go from bottles or nursing back to a tube.
The grandparents are all back and this was them watching from the window while we held her. I had a small breakdown this morning because I'm just SO scared to take her home where I won't have monitors to watch her heart rate or breathing and I just keep thinking "what if something happens?" I was terrified when I was pregnant thinking about being in charge of a little life but now that she's been sick - it's even scarier. But it's all about the TRUST in God I've been talking about. I had to remind myself that the God who did a miracle and gave me her in the first place and then did another miracle and healed her is the same God who will help me watch over her night and day. Harper likes me to sing to her (even if my singing is bad) and all day I've been singing "Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus". I need to hear that last line over and over - "Oh for grace to trust Him more!"
Our sweet friends - Brad, Amanda and Neely came to visit today. I felt so bad because we were in the midst of a major change when they came so we didn't get to visit much. Neely and Harper will be fast friends in the future I just know! Thank ya'll SO much for coming!!!!
Our big change was this afternoon - a doctor came out and said they had a private room open in the children's hospital and since Harper was doing well (and since our whole family was there in the NICU all day long) - they were going to move Harper there. I was so nervous at first because I was scared to leave the good care of the NICU and I wasn't sure how this would work but I have to tell you - we are so excited. The children's hospital is new and SO nice.
We now have this HUGE room with a flat screen TV and chairs and a couch and a place to keep our stuff and our own bathroom and we can be in the same room with Harper all day long. We can hold her and dress her up and change her as much as we want. And this will help us transition into going home. We still aren't sure when that will be. We got excited and thought it could be in a few days but it may be a couple of weeks instead. I'm totally good with that - I just want her to be 100% healthy when we take her home.

I think we have several visitors coming tomorrow so it should be a busy day! I'm going to get to stay with Harper at night now. Thank for continuing to pray for us! You have all blessed our lives so much!

That's great you will have your own room for her! It will be great bonding and wonderful practice for when you do go home, but extra insurance there with the nurses being able to help out too!

Harper is so cute and I love all the different bows! You gotta showcase all the outfits that girl wears! She's gonna be a little fashionista!

It is amazing that it has been two weeks since you began roller coaster of an adventure. How blessed you must feel to know that your baby girl and her story has already witnessed to so many people. God is nothing shot of amazing in how he can take a situation that we view as devastating and work it to glorify Him. Way to start your ministry from day one Harper! Happy two week birthday!

It's normal to be nervous. I was the same way when My daughter got out of the nicu after nearly 2 months. The doctors will not let her go until they know she is ready. You are a wonderful mom and will do just fine :)

Jess :) said...

A private room...that's wonderful!! I just am thrilled at the progress she's making!! Just know that God will continue to be with you and Scott even when you take her home, which I know you know, but sometimes...it's just nice to have that gentle reminder!! Now, when you and Harper are just hangin' out...you can get back to some serious reality TV and tell Harper all of the wonderful things that are going on!! Like, Mr. Jason Mesnick...Idol...Biggest Loser, etc. She will be loving life once she finds out about how fun TV can be!!! :)

Okay, I'll stop writing a book! Just wanted to let you know that I'm still thinking about you every minute and praying for you like crazy! By the way, the t-shirts are a hit!! Yay!! Isn't that exciting?!?

Love you lots,
Jess :)

P.S. Sending lots and lots of love, hugs, and kisses to Harper, as well!

I am just amazed at how well she's doing and how well you guys are hanging in there!
You look like a natural holding her!!

Also, I'm so impressed with you trying to nurse her. I know how rough it was with my girls, and they were born without any complications. Hang in there, girl, once you get her to latch on and your body gets used to it - give it about 4 weeks and you'll be absolutely fine with it!! It's hard - but SO WORTH the bond that you'll create with her.

Happy Two Weeks, Harper Baby!

That is so awesome!! After my son's heart surgery, it was awesome when we moved from the PCICU (pediatric cardiac ICU) to the floor, it was amazing! (We were at Vanderbilt in Nashville.) The room was big and it was a nice change. And you're right, it's a step toward going home. The only bad thing about "the floor" was that we had to stay with him a lot more and didn't have as much one-on-one care. Oh, and we were three hours away from home, and my husband and I had to share a pull-out couch that was slightly bigger than a twin. And we're each about six feet tall. It was hilarious. :)
You will look back on these days and weeks at the hospital with bittersweet memories. Being so glad that you were so well taken care of, so glad you're home.

Kelly-
My son was early. We got a monitor called the Bebe Sounds Angel Care monitor. It sounds an alarm if the child stops breathing for more than twenty seconds. It is a great monitor, and it is sold at Babies R Us. It was recommended to me by a nurse from the NICU there at St. Francis.

Kelly that is so great that you get to be with her all of the time! I wish we had that here! Who knows, Brayden and Harper might end up being released at the same time too (I wouldn't be surprised!)!!

Holly said...

Harper is a doll! Of course, you already know that but I just had to say it.

Ask your doctor about going home on an apnea monitor. If this is not an option then check into the Angel Care Monitor. These are sold at Babies R Us or you may even find a deal on Ebay. My son came home on an apnea monitor because of prematurity. Had it not been for the monitor, we most definitely would have lost him to SIDS at 8 weeks old. After doctors discontinued his monitor, a friend bought us an Angel Care monitor and it provided peace of mind more than anything. Hope this helps.

Blessings to you and yours,
Holly

Hello there. Praise the Lord! I'm so happy for little miss Harper! I'm praying she continues to make great strides! I know she will. My son was in the NICU for 2 weeks after he was born and it was VERY scary going home with out the monitors. I remember staying in his room with him and drifting to sleep watching his o2 stats and heart rate. Every time I moved and woke up I would check them. You might ask if the nurse can turn off the monitor in your room a few nights before you go home to get used to it!!!! God is with you! :)

Kelly, she is right where you want her to be - her step up unit. Perhaps you can request that she come home on a monitor. One of the boys did. I imagine that some of her alarms have gone off while you have been there, and they have really been 'false alarms'. The apnea monitor does as well. But it does go off. The smallest of the boys sometimes would 'forget to breathe' and the alarm would obviously surprise him and he would. My daughter gave it up after a few weeks, she felt comfortable at that point. My daughter was an extremely relaxed first time mom, but we were all concerned about the peanut of the bunch, and this really helped put her mind at total ease.

About being anxious about taking her home....a verse I have been praying over my pregnancy and it's last days.

This verse has given me so much peace. We are so happy about all the wonderful progress and great reports.

Oh! A private room is so nice!

I remember the two times my son Grady had the withdrawls from his sedation meds. The first he didn't sleep for 23 hours straight. The second time he would cry hysterically if you even looked at him. Luckily we got those weaned down!

Taking a baby home is so scary no matter what but taking one home who has been sick is much scarier! But, you're right, you have to hand it over to God. And trust your gut. If something seems not right, then call the docs, that's why they are there. I remember being so very scared to have Grady sleep with no monitors hooked up to him. Those beeps and numbers get very familiar and reassuring when you've been there that long!

Checking in daily and praying for Harper!

No meds, Awesome! She looks beautiful! That is great you got a private room.

When my son was in the NICU with pneumonia, he was only there 7 days, but I remember the first night home was scary. I would wake to nurse every 3 hours and I kept a 2hand watch with me so I could count his respirations. They were still high and I felt scared being alone without the care of the NICU. Every day got better though. Him and for myself.
Take care! Congrats!

Kim said...

I was concerned to take the twins home after their 17 day NICU stay because of their dsat score always making that monitor beep constantly. But from experience, I can tell you that I never thought about it once I brought those babies home - ever!

Happy 2 weeks sweet Harper! She is BEAUTIFUL!! So glad things are continuing to go well. I completely understand your fear of taking her home. I had the same thought as we were driving home from the hospital with Kinley. Just continue to remember how the Lord has watched over you guys and He will continue to do that at home, too.

Mark 14:14. We're still praying! Love seeing the pictures of the Stamps Family. BTW you look amazing. Hope you are doing good. You are such an inspiration! Your strength is amazing. I've really been praying for physical and emotional healing for you. See you guys soon!

I have been reading your blog everyday. I live near Hershey, Pennsylvania and I came across your blog while visiting another friend's blog. I have been thinking and praying for dear Harper and your family. I have a son, Owen, that will turn 2 in April. I remember how nervous I was to bring him home from the hospital when he was just a few days old. I had trouble sleeping worrying about SIDS and all that scary stuff. I bought the Angel Monitor from Babies R Us which sounds an alarm if the baby would stop breathing/moving. It was expensive, but SO worth it. The monitor part is cheap so we did not use that, but we did use the alarm for the first few months. We had a couple false alarms, but I knew that could happen so I did not completely freak out. Just a little bit of advice... you probably already have heard of it. If you want to know more about it my e-mail is sreager@comcast.net

DEMAND an apnea monitor to take home with you, your insurance should pay for it. If they won't the angel care crib sensor is great! If they stop breathing for a few seconds this huge alarm goes off - usually enough to startle the baby and they start to breathe again. It's a pad you put under the crib matress. Video and sound monitors were a life saver for our sanity even though I had the apnea monitor I checked her breathing every 10 mins.

I am thrilled with Harpers progress. I hope you can rest in this new room and be comfortable. Have a blessed night!

Being moved to that room is a HUGE step! That means she is doing SO well and is transitioning to go home! When we got moved to a room like that from the NICU it was such a burden lifted off..because we could all have some private time! And I know that fear of bringing a baby home after the NICU...but trust me..they will not send Harper home until she is 100%!!!

Check it out if it's a big concern of yours. Also... I sang "'tis so sweet" to my girls ALL the time, too. It was my anthem.

I'm a stranger to your family, but have been praying like crazy for your sweet Harper. I wanted to tell you about a monitor that I have used with both my girls (5 and 22 months) and currently with my son (12 weeks) It is called Angel Care Monitor, you can get it online or Babies R Us, or maybe even Target. It is the only reason I ever sleep when the kids are sleeping. It monitors movement in the crib, (even as sensitive as the chest moving while breathing) so if there is no movement for 15 seconds an alarm goes off. I see a couple of other ladies mentioned the monitor also...it is wonderful. I'll continue to pray for you, Harper and your family, and I'm sure I'll stalk your blog for many months to come just to see what Miss Harper is up to. Take Care, God Bless

Kelly once you get that precious child home, the owner's manual will open in your heart and you will have a built in GPS (God Positioning System) to guide you. You'll do great and the wonderful thing is Harper will never know if you are doing it "wrong" for a while.
Peace and grace dear.

Go Harper Go. I am so glad to see they moved her up to the children's hospital. I can imagine how scary it is for you. My son only spent 2 days in NICU for jaundice and I was terrified to take him home. For your peace of mind you might want to consider an Angelcare Monitor. It detects movements as well as sounds and will sound an alarm if she doesn't move. It is so sensitive it will detect breathing movements. It was a great relief for us to be able to lay our son down and shower knowing we would know if he was in trouble. Here are the monitors http://www.angelcare-monitor.com/ac-401/

Hope she continues to improve quickly and you are soon home in her beautiful room getting to know each other.

I have great anxiety over my children's safety, especially at night. I pray daily for them these verses: Psalm 121:2-8
"My help comes from the LORD who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, HE WHO KEEPS ISRAEL WILL NEITHER SLUMBER NOR SLEEP. The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not smite you by day, not the moon by night. The LORD will protect your from all evil. He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever."
That is my prayer for your tonight as well. That you may rest peacefully and care for your daughter worry-free because our Lord does not slumber nor sleep and keeps watch over you and her day and night.
I'm so happy that she is doing so well and am rejoicing with you tonight!

In placing you in that new room, He provides you with a piece of the transition that you will need and time to become more confident in yourselves as Harper's Mommy & Daddy. God is so good....all the time. All the time....God is so good.

My first daughter was in the NICU and I know exactly what you are going through with bringing Harper home. You hate all the monitors at first because they are scary but then you get used to them and they are almost comforting and you feel dependent on them. My husband and I swore we heard the beeping of all the monitors when we were in our nice quiet home. They even told us she may want noise when she sleeps at first so it was nice because she could sleep anywhere- you didn't have to tip toe around her- she was used to the business of the NICU and all the alarms going off! You'll get through it-it's scary at first but just give it to God! I'm so glad your baby is getting better!

So happy to see your new room! Now you can have some good family time with each other.
Keep trusting in Jesus to care for you and Harper. My 6 month old had some trouble with breathing before we left the hospital and I was scared to death to take her home. My husban kept reminding that she was in the Lord's hands. On the practicle side of things we knew that the doctors would not let her go home with us unless she was well. Think on things that are true and try not to imagine all the things that can happen.
Praying for Harper as she comes off of those meds. Hope y'all have a good night.
Much love,
Elyse

Your story is so much like mine, Kelly. When I brought L & L home from the NICU (and then the pediatric unit) they had to be on breathing monitors for 6 months!! It was so scary. But you will make it through. God will give you just what you need.

Lindy got pneumonia when she was 4 months old and I had to stay in her room with her at the hospital day and night for a week. She was in a big breathing tent. I was so scared that something would happen in there since I was alone with her alot of the time, but nothing did. We both survived. It was tiring though because there wasn't a bed...just chairs to sleep in!

I'm glad you can stay in the room with her now. I hope you can get some sleep in there!

Hi-I am came across your blog just after Harper was born and then I had not checked it until today. I am so happy that things are working out so well for you and your sweet baby. I started reading about you and your story while my twins were in the NICU also. I was able to bring them home a week ago. I to had a major breakdown about being scared that something would happen to them and that they would not be on the monitors that I so dearly watched. The nurses made me quit watching them as the time approached for us to be discharged. It was hard to do, but when the alarm went off I just kept looking at my babies. Being home was a major adjustment but the goodness of God and the peace of God will surround you so that you will be fine.
I pray Harper will continue to grow and be a blessing to you and your husband.

Hey Kelly! SO glad to hear Harper is doing so wonderful! What a lil' fighter! She is beautiful! I truly do understand your fear about taking her home. When my baby Luke came home after 6 1/2 weeks in the NICU I was TERRIFIED!! I was so scared that I probably didn't put him down at all those first couple of days (only to take a shower...). I mean, I even went to the potty while holding him (this is, no doubt, a skill you will quickly learn...)!! The only advice I can give you is to pray, pray, pray. That's all I did. Over and over. And I still do! Even at 4 months old, I still ask God to make sure that Luke remembers to breathe every night and I pray that I wake up to hear his cries. I tell God, "God, I don't care what time of the morning or how many times he wakes me up, just let Luke be healthy and breathe when he is supposed to!". In the hospital I actually witnessed him turn color because he was having heart rate drops with spells of no breathing. It's scary, I won't lie. But the nurses told me, and it's true, our little ones are so very resilient and we just had to have faith that God hears our prayers. You and your husband have already given her life to God to do what he will with it. This faith will get you through and you will eventually have that fear subside. Well, at least a little! :)
As moms we all have a healthy dose of worries about our babies, but I just had to remember that God loves Luke even more than I do and that it is a blessing that he is even "on loan" to me! Enjoy every minute of Harper...I know you will! Pray daily and nightly for God's blessing and protection over her! I am so happy that she is doing so great! She is starting to look more like you every day!!!

I have been reading your blog for about a week. I totally understand the fear of bringing them home. My daughter spent a week in the NICU because I developed an infection during delivery and she needed oxygen. She was weaned off the oxygen twice, but ended up having to come home with it. I was so scared! Luckily, we have a great friend who talked me through some of the issues we might see (she has a daughter with Tetrology of Fallot). Another big help for me was home health care. I would not be surprised if you get this "special" treatment - having a nurse come to your home every week (or more often) to reassure you that everything is fine was a big help. And most importantly, God will not give you more than you can handle. It might be challenging, but He is there with you through all of this!

Harper is so adorable. Hopefully she'll get over her withdrawals soon and be more content. In the meantime, there's nothing like momma to comfort her.

I think when Harper is ready to come home, you will be just fine. You've done great so far, there's no reason to think you won't continue in that direction. You are so in touch with her and her sweet little needs.

I am so excited for you. I can remember when I was told that our boys would be coming home. It was such a praise and then panic. We brought them home and it was great. You'll be okay, becasue you know who to trust.

Okay Kelly, I wrote you last week to tell you that my little boy was in the NICU (but only for 11 days).Anyway, I know exactly how you are feeling about leaving the hospital. It is completely normal. We went to the hospital one morning thinking that we were going to get to go home only to find out that he had started turning blue and dusty, scared me to death. I begged them to keep the monitors on him and I even wanted them to send them home with me. But it is just as you said, the Lord will watch over while you sleep. He is in control whether you are in the hospital or at home. Trust your doctors, that aren't going to send her home before she is ready. I am praying for sweet little Harper, she is absolutely beautiful.

I know your friends and family mean well with all the visits but the one thing you DO NOT WANT is for Harper to catch a cold or even worse, RSV. Especially in the winter, and especially any friends with young children, this is really something you need to think hard about. My daughter is a pediatrician working in a Childrens' Hospital and nightly I hear the stories about the sick babies with RSV, which may just seem like an ordinary cld in an older baby or adult. Your friends would be much more "real" friends if they communicated with you by email and telephone and did not come to the hospital to share their germs with you. I am surprised the doctors and nurses have not cautioned you about this yet.

Our first baby was a NICU baby too, with oxygen and feeding tube and all that fun...I totally understand your concern about not having the monitors to stare at constantly when you leave! But the sweet joy of getting her home will help to temper the fear, and you'll get used to the new normal quickly.

It took about three weeks once we got home for my son to transition to nursing well enough to stop the bottles -- those first few weeks at home, we spent most of our time feeding a bottle, then practicing nursing, then washing out bottles, and then a little nap before we started all over again -- but suddenly it was like someone flipped a switch and he could do it. Hang in there and give it time -- it is SO worth it!

So glad that she is doing so well. I can understand your being scared to death to bring her home. I'm certain that they won't send her home until she is well enough to be there, but still it wouldn't hurt to ask if there are services/visiting nurses or some type of help that could perhaps monitor for her for you for the first week or so to help you not feel so frightened.

Beautiful baby. Just beautiful. What a testimony she has to share when she gets older!

My niece was in the NICU for 101 days. We learned to trust God for what was needed for each day. We too were nervous about taking her home without the monitors and the medical staff a call away. God gave us peace and we had a very smooth transition home. God is now preparing you to take sweet Harper home and to care for her with confidence!

I am so glad your precious girl is on here way towards going home! My son's situation sounds so similar to Harper's. Taking him home was so scary, you have faith that God is in control, but the amount of machines they were hooked to and all the numbers just scared me. I didn't want to be in charge by myself because of the "what if"s. Someone purchased a movement monitor for us which was a God send! It is a plastic board that goes under the mattress and if there is no movement for 15 seconds an alarm goes off. My husband and I were able to sleep so much better knowing our baby was okay. We still use it and he is 10 months old. I will give you the link to babies r us. It is over $100, but let me tell you it is so worth it! Hang in there you are in the homestretch and you will be more than able to care for your girl. The best thing for her is loving parents who will be attentive to her needs and it seems she already has that! Good luck!

Kelly - what a blessing to have her own room and be out of the NICU already! I can understand your fear though - our daughter is six months old and it took me until about a month ago to not check on her every five minutes while she was sleeping to make sure she was still breathing. In fact, she slept in our bed for probably the first month or more, because I couldn't handle having her even the few feet away from me in her cradle. Then, the first night I put her in her crib in her bedroom...wow, I did not sleep very well at all! It was so hard to be away from all the monitors that told us she was doing fine and to be completely on our own...but actually we weren't alone. Like you said, you need to put your trust in God at this time, because HE is the one who will carry you through, heal your little one completely, and give you the strength for each new day. As long as you keep Him at the center of your home, I am sure you will be a wonderful mom! God bless your sweet family - you are continually in my prayers!

I will pray for you guys continually. I know what you mean, the scariest part is doing it on your own and going through all of the "is she breathing?" moments....not to mention the what all she's been through. It is scary to go from the ICU to a regular room, but you will quickly love it!!! IT is so much more peaceful & relaxing...if that is possible ina hospital! HA!! Anyway, good luck with the withdrawls for poor Harper. Still praying!

I continue to lift your family in prayer, Kelly- what a huge PRAISE to God in Harper's progress. She is a little miracle and it's no doubt Who gets the GLORY!! Such a beautiful baby going to a beautiful home and family. God is so good, all the time.

I have been following your story for over a week now and have to say I ADMIRE you both so much for your faith and courage. My husband and I have a daughter that will be 11 weeks old on Monday and a son that is 28 months. Being scared to take her home is completely normal but I have to say that you and your husband are going to surprise yourselves with how great your parenting instincts are to care for her and protect her.

SO glad that Harper is doing well and can you have gone to a room that will be your first step in the road to going home! Yeah!!
Remember that God has brought you this far and he will equip you for when you take Harper home...He is so faithful and he will have your 'mommy radar' on full - give you that gentle knudge if you need to be aware of something for Harper...of course my prayer is that you will have the confidence that she is totally well when you take her home :)
Blessings!

This baby moniter SAVED ME when my boy was little...it sounds an alarm if the baby is not breathing or moving...mostly gave me assurance that the baby was OK!

So happy your beautiful little gal is doing so well!! You know, she goes home on a bit of oxygen you can ask for a pulse oximeter. I have one for Ralphie and it is such a nice reassurance to know what his oxygen levels are and also his heartrate. Hope you can go home very soon and don't worry - you are going to take excellent care of her!

Stephanie
