Age is just a number

Today I turn 36 and I'm having a little bit of a hard time realizing I'm closer to 40 than to 30. I always thought when I turned 30 I would have to lock myself away in a dark room and spend about a week crying but I had just gotten married weeks before so I was a happy newlywed and could have cared less that I had entered my 30's.
And then I thought when I turned 35. Yikes 35 .....that just sounds so old. But I was weeks away from having my precious baby and I could not have been happier.

And this year? Well - in my head I'm 25. I look in the mirror lately and I see wrinkles and gray hair and a face that isn't as young as it used to be (probably mostly to a LOT of laying out in my 20's) and I should be sad. But this year has been the BEST year I have ever had. I am so blessed I can barely understand it. Every dream I ever had has come true and MORE! I could not have dreamed the things that have happened to me this year. And I'm okay with 36.

When I was in my 20's - I was VERY insecure. I worried so much about how I looked or what people thought of me. I have found in my 30's I am worrying a lot more about what God thinks of me. I worry a lot more about what other people are going through than I do about how much the scale said this morning. I'm thankful God has changed my perspective. I'm thankful for each day I have.
And let's face it - I would rather be 36 than this awkward 13 year old EVER again!!! Can I get an amen? All I can say when I see this picture is "Bless your sweet heart 13 year old Kelly". Awkward was my middle name. (Still is).

If you want to see more horrid pictures of me and get a good laugh ......you can venture over to my mom's blog where there are some pictures only a mother could love. ha!

Your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:16

Happy Birthday, Kelly! I couldn't agree more about your 30's. I am 33 and it's so true. You do start to worry less about what others think and more about what our Heavenly Father thinks! I hope you have a wonderful day celebrating you and the gift that you are to so many people!

I hope you have a happy birthday! I am always happy to be my age (38)...when my Dad was sick with cancer I remember him saying on his birthday.."I am 72 years old today, and if I live, tomorrow I will be 72 years and one day. Won't that be wonderful?" And it was wonderful, but he never made it to 73 :o( Yeah! you're 36 today! Isn't that wonderful?

Happy Happy Day! You're right...age is just a number. I go to Ladies Bible Class Tuesday mornings and am shocked when I find out some of those ladies ages...they can run circles around me! And I hear ya on the face...mine seems to be changing daily-hopefully I can use my wrinkles to dissuade my daughter from laying out. haha!

Kelly words cannot even begin to describe how much your mom and I love you. You talk about living a dream. I had no idea when I held you for the first time 36 years ago how the years ahead would unfold. I knew then that I loved you with all my heart. It's amazing how God enlarged my heart thousands of times over so that I could love you all the more today. Have a blessed and happy birthday. - Dad

I just love that picture more than words can describe.

And this post is one of those that I can feel God saying, "Pay attention to this - I have put this girl in your life for a reason, and one is for wisdom and perspective for the years to come!"

Thanks for you being you, sweet friend! Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Kelly!
I turned 36 the same semester my first year teaching. I loved my 30's. So much more confidence. And trust me on this, the 40's aren't so bad either. Look at it this way, in your 40's you'll have a young child. In my 40's, I'm called "Mimi." Harper is keeping you young! LOL

I just started reading your blog, and would have guessed from photos that you were still in your 20's! Since I too am a mid-30s "girl" I celebrate you even more - Happy Birthday - you make 36 look fabulous!

Kelly - I wish you the happiest of birthdays! I looked at your Mom's blog...that was priceless. My how things change, huh? I also read your Dad's sweet comment above - how very touching. I know how much you treasure your parents. May God bless and keep you as you celebrate today and many more blessings in the years ahead with your growing baby girl!

Yesterday I turned 36, too. Mr. Beachy and I had celebrated this past weekend with a mini vacation which was great, but yesterday, the actual DAY, was really hard for me. I could have cared less that it was my birthday because it was my first one without my mom. I think 36 is way too young to be without a mom.

Happy Birthday! My birthday was Sunday and my oldest niece turns 16 today! Oh, my youngest niece turned 11 on 12/4, my Mom's birthday is 12/5, my parents anniversary is 12/15, Dad's is 12/16, and my brother's is 12/18! We celebrate them all together. LOL

36 seems so young when I just turned 44. LOL

Hope you have a fabulous day!

P.S. I love the way you dress Harper. If I had a daughter, I would be dressing her the same way! She's so fashionable! hehehe

Happy Birthday Kelly! I had my miracle boy last year right after I turned 37! I thought 37 was so old when I was young because my mom actually had me when she was 37 as well. I remember thinking I would NEVER be that old having a baby! Well, I had my first at 29, and then God had another plan. During all of the waiting, one time my dad said, "You're going to be 37 just like you mom was when you have another baby." Yikes, that was prophetic. It's still so young. I am about 6 weeks away from 38, and I feel the same way as you do. I feel 18! I totally agree that getting older only means getting wiser and more compassionate towards others. And more appreciative of the blessings that God has given! MAY YOU HAVE THE BEST YEAR EVER! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Lauren said...

Kelly, this post spoke volumes to me!!! There is so much I have learned from you and going through my 20's. Everyone that I've ever spoken with about age has always said they'd NEVER go back to their 20's but that the 30's were some of the best years. That ackward 13 year old in that picture is what made you who you are today and I'm thankful for that.

Love you friend!!! Happy Birthday!!!

I love that you wrote you are most concerned about what God thinks of you. Isn't that how we should all think?! Not that God judges with wrong purposes, just that He wants us to do His will. He wants us to do what He's made us for.

I just loooove that you wrote that. I'm going to work really hard to focus on how God sees me instead of how other's see me :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Love,
Gussy

Oh Kelly, your mom's post made me cry! I know I'm pregnant and hormonal, but it just hit me so hard. I have 3 kids (one more on the way) and I know how I feel about them and can't wait to be able to say that to them when they have kids! I know I don't have that same feeling from my mom (another story). I'm so glad that you realize what a wonderful gift you have in the loving parents God gave you. And then for Him to bless you with a daughter of your own! Glory to God, great things He hath done!

Yes, Kelly ageIS just a number! I found 42 a lot more easier than 40 I admit! At 30 I thought I was going to be an old maid forever, but God brought along my husband and we now have the 4 children we prayed for,

Your Mom's photos made me smile, as I grew up in the same era, and have many similar photos. Also we live in a 1970s house in original condition, so even though it doesn't look like something out of Better Homes and Gardens, it evokes happy memories of growing up in simpler times.

Happy birthday! I love your blog and don't know that I've told you that before. Your picture made me laugh - but I think everyone (myself definitely included) had some "ugly years" as I call them! :)

Happy Birthday Kelly!! You have a beautiful little girl, I love reading your blog & seeing all the fun things you do with Harper and her adorable outfits!!

I have also gone through infertility (secondary) and have since been blessed with more children, so I love that you are so sensitive to those that have or are dealing with that!

Merry Christmas & God Bless!!

Beautiful words today! Happy Birthday too. I have also learnt not to look at how "old" I am (I'm almost 43) but rather how many years God has given me. So many die young or don't have a wonderful husband and children. I have 42 years of thankfulness to look back on and praise God for. I have 5 beautiful children and like you said, who would want to go back! The only days I want to go back are to remember what is was like to have little ones around my feet:) Cherish each day God gives you with your precious litle family.

Happy Birthday Kelly. You were an adorably sweet looking 13 and you seem like a beautiful (inside and out) 36 year old. A beautiful post about what really matters:)

Laughing out loud with you about that picture! I don't know if I could EVER post a picture of myself at that age! I just turned 34 on the 16th and I feel the same as you. I love my life and would never want to go back to the "good old days" of teendom.

Age is mind over matter - if you don't mind, it doesn't matter!
That's what I keep telling myself anyway.
Happy Birthday!!

Happy Happy Birthday!!

You're not "old" yet silly!!

It always amazing me that "those" people who seem so beautiful and so percect and so put together in their perfect lives feel as akward as I do. Thank you for the reminder:)

Happy Birthday, Kelly ! May it be one of your very best.

I love the verse Ps.139:16. One of my all-time favorites.

Happy Birthday! You share a birthday with my momma. Great day!

No, you shouldn't be sad. Because that would be vain and petty and ridiculous. Instead, you are grateful...exactly as you should be. You are blessed and giving God the glory. Thanks for continuing to share His goodness on your blog. I was the goofy, awkward 13 year old too, and my glasses were bigger than yours...no really...they were!!!

Have a happy birthday and a Merry Christmas.

Happy Birthday! I look forward to reading your blog every day and now I've my 15 year old niece reading right along with me. I think your blog is the first thing she reads when she gets home from school and frequently calls and says " awww, did you see the outfit Harper had on today". Wishing you a very Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas!

Happy Birthday Kelly! My daughters birthday was yesterday (the big 12) and so I know just how your mom feels about being blessed with a baby girl right before Christmas....priceless!

I really enjoy reading your blog and appreciate your time & effort with it. It will be a great keepsake for you to have on what went on in Harpers life!

Happy Birthday! It is crazy how one day you wake up and think of how old you actually are. I turned 32 this past year. I just can't picture me as old. That was my parents, not me! :) Sometimes I would love just to stop time for awhile. Especially having my two toddlers. I would love to keep them young and so innocent. Hope you have a great day. Go Hogs! :) Had to say it. LOL.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You don't look like you are 36! I jumped to your mom's blog and BOY did I see Harper sitting on their lap! Age really is just a number and when you have SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR, how can you be "depressed"! We are BLESSED to be here! I am going to be 38 in April and I keep thinking, WOW, 38! I am so old! Thinking back to when we thought 40 WAS OLD! But really it isn't! Hope you had a FANTABULOUS BDAY!

Happy Birthday, Kelly! :0) I am also 36 and unfortunately (not complaining; know God has a plan), not a single one of my dreams have come true...I am not a wife, not a mother, not being paid to write or anything like that. BUT this is not a pity party--this is about God's story in me and Him getting glory out of where He's leading me...even if it looks NOTHING like what I thought I needed/wanted.

You look amazing for our age and what's more eternally significant is that you are making a difference in the lives of others - including me! Happy Birthday and MERRY CHRISTmas! :)

Um, is that a big bow in your hair?? Why am I not surprised! Happy birthday, friend.

Happy Birthday! I will be 36 in April and that closer to 40 thing is a little weird but I have to say that life keeps getting better as I get older and learn more about the Lord and as I enjoy the gifts he has given me in my husband and children. However, there are days when the gray hairs and wrinkles are a little disconcerting! =) I hope your birthday is wonderful!
