A whole bunch of STUFF

Before I write anything else - I want to share with you that my dad (he's a pastor) is writing a series of blogs about why bad things happen to good people. I know as we constantly see such sad things on blogs or hear of people losing children or having cancer - it's hard to understand. I hope that you will hop over and read what my dad writes - hopefully through the Bible - we can better understand. I also recently saw this video which I thought was great as well on the same subject.
So I've been on a quest to spruce up our bedroom. It's been the same for many years and I've never really liked it too much. Lately it was covered in baby things but sadly - Harper has outgrown most of it (bouncy seat, activity mat, etc) so I have begun packing them up and putting them away.

This was how our bedroom looked before
And this is after. If you remembered - I wanted to do white and brown bedding and I got this bedding from Dillard's. I really, really like it. I found white lamps at T J Maxx that I really like and new curtains. I know it might look better if the curtains were longer and were raised several inches above the windows -this is what I could get for now. Maybe later - I'll work on making them longer or raising them.
The next thing I want to do is get several gallery frames - big white mats and frames like the ones from Pottery Barn below (only I'm going to search for a budget option) and frame family pictures for the 2 walls on either side of our bed.
I am so lucky to have a big group of friends from church/Sunday School who are all stay at home moms and we get together every other week at a different house for lunch and for the kids to play and for us to visit. I've been working hard all week to get my house ready (as clean as I can with a baby and limited time) and I just realized that we are having "Martin" day at play group tomorrow - because I'm making my Dad's enchiladas, my mom's salsa (recipe below) and my brother's guacamole. And a strawberry dessert!

My mom found this recipe for Chili's salsa (which we love) and she makes it like every week now:

CHILI'S SALSA

1 (14 1/2 oz.) can tomatoes and green chilies
1 (14 1/2 oz.) can whole canned tomatoes (plus the juice)
4 teaspoons jalapenos (canned, diced, not pickled)

1/4 cup yellow onion (diced)
1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon sugar

and this is not on the recipe but we add: 1/4 teaspoon cilantro and juice from 1/2 lime

1. In food processor place jalapenos (optional) and onion and process for just a few seconds.
2. Add both cans of tomatoes, salt, sugar, cumin, cilantro and lime juice.
3. Process all ingredients until well blended but do not puree.
4. Place in covered container and chill.
5. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips!

and Last but certainly NOT least - here is a little girl who is LOVING carrots!!!!
(We'll work on eating a little neater later)

P.S. Harper HAS been in her own room for about a month now and is doing great!!!

I read but don't normally comment (sorry) but had to say I love your "new" bedroom! AND Harper is a sweetheart... :-)

If you haven't already discovered, carrots are HARD to get out of clothes so be careful! TBH I stopped feeding them to my dd bc I was getting so frustrated with them and now that she can eat them just steamed, she's eating them alot.

I'm going to go read your dad's blog - we've going through a bit of a rough time and it could be just be the reminder I need.

God bless.

hahaha, nice! Loving the easy-to-clean bibs! I read your Dad's blog this morning and it was so good to hear him speak truth! Tip about the gallery frames...Hayden and I bought a bunch like that at Wal-Mart and he just spray painted them. We also got some very pretty ledges at Target on major sale!

Love the bedroom. You might try Kohl's for the frames - they are usually reasonably priced and have some very similar.

I love your "new" bedroom Kelly! It looks great. Hobby Lobby is a great place for frames and they have a great 50% sale most of the time.

Too funny...I was just fixing to look up a recipe for some enchiladas to make this week. And, oh my goodness, I thought that was SALSA all over Harper's face at first!! Hahaha! I'm happy to know you haven't moved her into the realm of jalapenos and chiles just yet! ;o) But, hey, ya never know... ;o)

Shaunta said...

Love the bedroom! So pretty! I wanted white frames in our house but couldn't find any that really jumped out at me, so I took plain inexpensive wooden frames and spray painted them white. It gave them a little character, and even though all the frames aren't the same style, they all match color wise!

LOVE the new look in the bedroom!! I also really like the idea you have of customizing your curtains by adding some fabric to the length--that would kick it up another notch!! Ha Ha cracked up when I saw Harper's carrot face!! Too cute for words!!

Your bedroom looks great! Harper is so adorable eating her carrots, my boys loved sweet potatoes.

Kristi said...

Beautiful revamp of the bedroom, Kelly. I love the longer curtains as well! I purchased longer curtains for our bedroom about a foot above the top of the windows and it definitely adds more drama. You know, you could even (if you sew, or could take them to a seamstress) have additional fabric attached to the bottoms of the ones you have for a colorblock look. I'm can't tell what fabric your curtains are, but maybe you could add some white silk fabric to the bottoms to tie in the bedding set.

Harper's adorable with her little carrot stained face. Oh, but guard those clothes. Carrots stain so badly!

Kristi said...

Kind of like this with adding the fabric to the bottom of the curtains (wasn't sure if my explanation made sense!)

I love your makeover! The warm rich colors look so inviting. An idea... you mentioned wanting perhaps longer curtains to hang them higher on the wall to make the ceiling and windows look taller. You could easily have someone build something similar to this keep it simple but elegant: http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-make-a-foam-core-cornice/index.html You could hang it above where you have your curtains now to make it appear like the windows were taller. I think your room looks fabulous but it's just an idea since you mentioned having longer curtains. It doesn't have to be expensive at all.

Karen said...

Love the new colors in your room. Thinking that hanging over your bed is a little too big and overpowering for that space.......just a thought. Harper's little face is just too precious!

You should make your own chips too!! I use a deep fryer for this. Take CORN tortillas cut them into fourths and then fry them for a few minutes. Then salt! TA-DA! Chips just like they taste at your local Mexican restaurant! Since we live in Italy because of the military i do not get to eat mexican food unless we make it ourselves so i make these chips often!!

Kelly,

You are are a super Mother and wife. However, I do have to say it is time for Harper to be in her own room and bed.

Have you thought of adding something to the bottom of the drapes...it would add some interest and you would be able to hang them higher.
Also, I have an art suggestion...take artist canvas and then do hand and footprints in black paint. Then just date it and put Harper's name in the corner...instant art! If I get around to it I will do it with my own two wee ones and show you!

Love the new look of your room....and I am so wanting chips and salsa now. If you are wanting to make your curtains longer you could always sew a panel across the bottom of white material and then put something decorative(like ribbon) to match the room on the seam. Cheap and easy way to lengthen curtains:)

Your bedroom looks so beautiful! I know you are going to love getting some of your beautiful photos in frames. I've found Ikea frames to be the most bang for your buck.

I'm so glad Harper is loving' carrots. I fed Schäfer so much carrots and pumpkin that he turned orange. I'm not kidding. Hubs politely asked me to steam the boy some cauliflower until his natural coloring returned! *hugs*

I love your room...Id love to spruce mine up too since my husband and I still use most of the stuff Ive had since middle school! :)
Anyways I saw your pottery barn frames and I wanted to let you know that if you go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby you can buy sheets of mat to frame with for about $1-$2. You can buy it in any colr you can imagine. So, all you would need is an exacto knife to cut out the middle. (And maybe a little practice.) Then you could find cheep frames and make your own! Through reading your blog I see how crafty you are I know you could make wonderful frames!!!

Three quick things...

1. I love your bedroom. It looks really cozy. I bet it looks pretty at night when all the lights are out except for the lamps. I'm a big fan of lamplight.

2. Harper's carrot face is too stinkin' cute!

3. Chili's salsa rocks, so thanks for the recipe! Can't wait to try it!

Hi Kelly,
I love your blog!
I have a random question for you...I have a co-side sleeper for my little 2 month old and I usually just end up changing him in bed. Well, since he is a boy (my other 2 were girls) he often pees all over the bed and I am going through sheets like crazy.
To make a long story short... did you find that you used the changing table option on your pack n play you had for Harper. I am considering buying one but am having a hard time spending the money since I already have the co-side sleeper.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Your bedroom looks awesome! If you want longer curtains, it would be an easy fix. Just sew a panel at the bottom is maybe white or red or pink or even the same chocolate brown but not in the silk fabric, rather in a heavier velvet maybe. You could add a chocolate brown grosgrain ribbon line across the seam line.

HI Kelly, I have found the museum style mats at Michaels. Use the 40 off coupon. Then get the frames at Hobby Lobby, often on sale for 50% off. And like other posters have said, if you find what you want and it isn't the right color, just spray paint it. The bedroom looks great. I love the piece over your bed and glad you kept it in this makeover. Dawson will blend nicely with the new bedding. ha! As always, Miss Harper is adorable. Glad she is loving her carrots.
