08/08/08
If you have watched TV at all this summer - you know the day is here. The start of the summer olympics. Will you be watching?
I'm not going to lie - I have about 0% interest in the Olympics. I MIGHT watch a little gymnastics if I can just not find a good Lifetime movie or if I've seen all the reality shows on TV.
Back in 1984 I remember watching Mary Lou Retton at my grandmother's house. That was probably the only time in my life I have ever watched with interest. I even did a report on her in 9th grade when we had to do American Dream projects. (I'm kind of thinking the oral report involved me dressing up in gym clothes and leading the class in exercises - oh dear).
IF you watch - what is your favorite part of the Olympics?
On another note - one of my co-workers is in the hospital today having her baby. What a cool birthday, huh? We have a pool going in our office because I think this is going to be a HUGE baby. I can't wait to see how big he is. I picked the day right so if I can just get the weight right -I win! (I guessed 9 lbs 12 oz but I think he's going to be over 10 lbs).

The only olympics I watch is ice skating in the winter, but I may watch a little gymnastics. I saw the ladies team on Today yesterday and they are too cute! I also remember Mary Lou winning and I watched it at my Nana's house too!

I cannot imagine having a 10 pound baby, wow!

Didn't all girls look up to Mary Lou?
As for this year, my daughter is really excited about watching gymnastics. She wants to be there one day.
I'll probably watch with her and I do enjoy the swimming & diving.

Kelly,

Thank you for saying that about the Olympics!!! I really do not want to watch it either. I felt kind of guilty. I am really interested in the equestrian however! I grew up riding and showing horses so I will watch all of the equestrian shows. :-) Those horses are beautiful...and the riders are amazing.

Hope you are feling better,
Melissa

So, don't make fun BUT we LOVE the Olympics! I am not crazy about the location this year, but we enjoy the gymnastics, swimming, softball, running etc. It is just the right amount of sports before Football really gets going!

Oh, I hope you win the pool! 10lbs? Wow!

I LOVE the Olympics!! I will especially be watching Shaun Johnson in gymnastics...when I lived in Des Moines I worked for a Before & After School program, and I had her in my summer program when she was a Kindergartener & her mom was one of my bosses (I knew then she would go to the Olympics). I will also be watching Ben Askren in wrestling...he was one of our AWESOME wrestlers here at Mizzou!!

I love watching gymnastics! Other than that, I don't care for it too much. I sometimes will watch the swimming or diving parts if I'm really bored. I know you don't know me, but I've been enjoying your blog! I'm due exactly one week after you (January 20th), so it's been nice to see other Jan. 2009 mommas out there!

I still have yet to hear of a baby as big as Flint Walter Harris, besides like the babies in the record books! He was 11 lbs 7 oz! Yikes for me! Okay...i made a huge post on the Olympics today! We LOVE the Olympics...It helps to know the athletes. However, I loved it as a child. Anything to do with sports and I just love the spirit of it all!

Too funny! I just posted an Olympic post too. Except, I do like the Olympics. I love the swimming and gymnastics!
I remember having a Mary Lou Retton gymnastics outfit when I was little. Wow, what a sight that must have been. I'm sure it gave my parents a good laugh.
Have a great weekend.

Oh my! How funny that you have 0% interest in the Olympics!

I just blogged this morning about how excited I am!!! WOO HOO! :) Sorry, it's the dork in me.

And, um, ouch for the 10 pounder!

My 2nd baby was 9 pounds 9 ounces. When you are barely 5 feet tall BIG doesn't not begin to describe your girth when carrying a baby that size!!

My 3rd baby was due in August of 06. I totally wanted to deliver her on 08-07-06. = ) So I think an 8-8-08 birthday is really fun. My husband's birthday is 5-5-75. That's pretty fun.

We enjoy the Olympics here.

Today, in honor of the opening of the Olympics, I came up with a bunch of fun things to do tonight with my husband and kids.

Wherever the Olympics are held, we learn all about that country for the period of time that the Olympics are on. Tonight, to learn about China, we are having Chinese food (yum) and I printed out a ton of stuff on China, we are going to color the China flag, and learn about the Great Wall of China. ( got a ton of books from the Library). We are also going to learn about the people of China.

Then we will have a little segment on the Olympic rings and why there are 5 of them and why the colors. :)

Plus, we are making a Chinese lantern for a craft. :)

It inspires me, when I watch the Olympics. I love track, gymnastics, diving, volleyball.

No, not really into the Olympics at all--falls into the sports category for me.

I laughed about the American Dream report. Mr. Pyle! :) I did mine on Hank Parker.

I guess it sounds like your co-worker's baby will go right on by the 8 lbs. 8 oz. mark!? That would be neat though, with this birthdate!

It is so nice to see that I'm not the only one who has 0% interest in the Olympics (my hubby thinks I'm crazy). My girls are so excited about them (you would think that Hannah Montana was coming to visit), so they get to have "Daddy, Daughter" time tonight while I sneak off to the bedroom and either scrapbook or read....

I hope you win your office pool... let us know!

I probably won't watch too much myself but I do love to see the medal ceremony when the Americans win gold. I love seeing their faces and hearing the National Anthem.
Good luck to your friend.
Blessings,
Linda

Kelly, PLEASE watch SOFTBALL!!! You will like it, I promise!!! The coaches and several of the players are dear friends and I am praying for their safety while in China, and a GOLD MEDAL of course!
Best of luck for your friend, sounds like she is getting ready to deliver a 'whopper':)
Have a wonderfully blessed weekend,
Kaye

I love the Olympics! My favorite events are track and field, swim/dive, and gymnastics! Growing up I LOVED the Synchronized Swimming! I used to "practice" it in our pool! We still get a good laugh out of that!

I absolutely LOVE the gymnastics!! I will never forget Kari Shrugg landing on one foot! The girl was just awesome!!

I like the swimming, too. I hope the Phelps guy reaches his goal of 7 medals!

The only Olympic events I watch are gymnastics in the summer and ice skating in the winter. All I have heard anyone talk about the past few days is the Opening Ceremony and it guilted me into feeling like I had to watch tonight, as if it would be unpatriotic not to. However, we had our wrap-up for VBS week tonight and I completely forgot.

Oh, and I definately remember taking a Wheatie's box to a salon to have my hair cut like Mary Lou Retton... and had the Dorothy Hamill pixie many years before that.

Hey Kelly! I started reading you a couple of months ago, and I can't even remember how I found you...think maybe it had something to do with Travis Cottrell or Beth Moore's blogs and somebody I clicked on from there! Anyway, I have just updated my links and added you, so I hope you don't mind! Congratulations on Baby H! We had our fourth (surprise) eleven months ago (she was almost born on 9-8-07!). Motherhood is amazing...I can already tell you will be awesome :)

We don't have cable, so I will HAVE to watch the olympics. But we don't watch NBC that often either. I like gymnastics and swimming/diving. I probably won't watch more than that at least willingly.
I'm glad Bib Brother is on now, that keeps me entertained through out the week.

I'm feeling old now, since I remember the years of Nadia Comaneci and Olga Korbut (70s). I enjoy lots of the Olympics, but don't watch it non-stop. I am a sap for all the stories that get told of the athletes lives and efforts getting to that level. Oh, and of course, I'll be rootin' for Dara Torres the 41 year old swimmer!!

You have been organizing all of your links! Looks good!

Still feeling the popcorn popping? : )

Hello! I have been reading your blog lately - I can't remember how I found you. I love to read your blog and hear all of your ideas. Congrats on your little miracle!!! I also have a website/blog, but it looks pretty pitiful compared to yours :) I just wanted to introduce myself. Hope you have a great weekend!

I'm a day late checking in but we went to a good friend's 50th birthday party last night. We had a super time. I thought that it was so cool to have a special birthday on 08-08-08.

Our oldest son got married last summer on 07-07-07. He certainly will never have an excuse for forgetting his anniversary, will he? (He shouldn't anyway =)

Bless your co-worker's heart. I hope things go well. My 2 yr. old nephew weighed 10 lbs. 12 oz. Oh, my word! When my brother came out and told us , we all stood in this group (or gaggle, however you want to picture this) and repeated his weight very slowly together. We could not comprehend how big he was! His mother did NOT have a c-section, either!! We all live near each other. My mom and I made supper everyday for them for over 2 weeks. It was the LEAST that we could do!! =)

Wow 10 lbs...That's huge!My big one was 9 lbs 1oz, and she was a buddah.Great birthday!
Not a huge summer olympic watcher either.I remember being at my grandmother's house watching Mary Lou compete, too. There weren't 5million TV channels to surf when we were little so we watched what ever my grandparents did.Me and my girls watched the opening ceremony. They lasted about 20 mins. They can now raise their hand in school and say they watched. :)
