TV Tray

I've never painted anything in my life so don't expect perfection.

Here is how the TV tray looked before - just your basic plain Wal-Mart $10 tray

And here it is after I finished it up.

I decided to go the plain route - but what do you think? Should I add polka dots? I thought about it but wasn't sure if I was brave enough. If I was crafty like a lot of my blogger friends - I would have tried to do a harlequin border on the edge of the trays - but I REALLY wasn't that brave.

If I do polka dots - do I do just green? Or white and green? Or pink and green? Or red and green? I'm taking suggestions.

Love them! They look so great! I would say yes, add polka dots, start w/ green first and then add from there. You are so crafty!

I say yes go for the polka dots. Do white and green

Looks great, Kelly! Polka dots would make it pop! I like green and white, but I'm sure whatever you do will be fabulous!!

Good job Kelly! I think I would maybe do a simple border rather than polka dots, but that's just me. What about GOLD polka dots though?? That would be cute but not "cutesy".

Great job! If you want the polka dots to all be the same size(s) you could by some small round sponges at the craft store, dip them in the paint and then lay them on the tray.

I think they look great! My vote is also for the white and green polka dots!

Too cute! I'd go for the dots. I think red and lime green would be fab. I'm partial to green and red though. It's all over my house! :) You really did a fantastic job!

I like them! I say you can never have too many polka dots! You could even outline the "S" with small polka dots to frame it nicely.

I agree with another comment - go for a border!! But, if not, my vote is for white or red? Umm, I'm probably not the one to ask though - I get decision anxiety with things like that! :0) It looks cute though! You are fun!

I am voting for green polka dots. The trays look really good.

If you do polka dots, there are brushes just for that at Hobby Lobby. They have wooden handles with a foam gum drop looking end that makes it super easy to make perfect polka dots. I painted some wooden letters and then used the brushes to add polka dots (they have assorted sizes in the bag)Just a suggestion.

I am obsessed with polka dots so I say add them! I'm with the white and green so Scott won't think they're too girly!

Its funny...I see green and black every where now! They've always been my two favorite colors.

Too cute! Polka dots would really glam it up, but stick to the green. You don't want to start adding too many colors,(white and red)because then it would look like you needed to just add Santa and a Merry Christmas logo! Great job!

This is a great idea! I think pink dots would be totally cute. And some green ones too. Maybe all different sizes all up and down the legs. Or maybe make the foot rest green or something. These look great!

Yes, do the poka dots. I like circles of different sizes & colors. Scott's could be green & blue. Yours could be pink & green. You can do it!

I think polka dots would be cute...white ones with a few green!

Great job, Kelly! You're craftier than you think...I've seen some of your creations, like your wreath at Christmas that you made out of ornaments. Very cute!

Very cute~ I'd say yes to the polka dots. How about white with touches of green, maybe a little lighter shade of green too??

Cute!

I think polka dots would be darling. And I'm sorry to tell you but anyone who would take the time to paint not one, but TWO t.v. trays is automatically classified as crafty.

Somebody needs to get you your own craft/cooking show. I agree the polka dots in a different shade of green.

These are super cute!!! Great job! I really want to paint ours now. What kind of paint did you use for the black part?

I think the polka dots would really be a great finish...I'd probably do green and white or green and red. Someone else mentioned also doing a tiny polka dot border around the "S"--I'd go for that--that sounds cute! Will you seal it with something so the paint doesn't chip off when you put a plate on them? I don't know if it's needed, just a thought.

Too cute! I agree that you should add polka dots. Green and white would be really cute. Use the round sponge brushes. It makes it impossible to mess anything up.

What a great idea! We had a set of 4 trays identical to these when we were first married. I gave them away when we got new furniture that didn't match (cause I'm OCD like that). Why oh why didn't I think to paint them?

My vote is for green and white polka dots.

Hi Kelly, I love them. Now I am inspired to do mine (that I have had for 8 years). What type of black paint did you use? You are very talented don't kid yourself!

Polka dots would be really cute! I am not a good one to tell you what color...I get most of my inspriations from magazines and local boutiques...so I really am not all that creative. (wish I was).

Kelly, good for you!

I would use painter's tape to mask off a border right on the edge of the tray, then paint the border solid green. I think I would also tape off the edges of the S and go ahead and paint in the gap left by the stencil. Then, I would do white (or you might consider charcoal gray or brown...less contrast) polka dots with the small paint daubers that the others have suggested...much more uniform that way. And I would leave 2-3 inches between dots, just so it doesn't get too busy. You might even want to kind of measure out a grid and put a little pencil mark where you want your dots to be.

Of course, if you don't like the outcome, you can paint over & start again...I can't tell you how many times I've done that! That's part of creativity...trial & error!

I just caught up on all the posts I haven't read. Can I just say that TV trays are the best? That is how Tim & I eat. Couch, food, tv trays...sad really, but so great! Love the chic tv tray look! Your new glasses are SO cute too. Still praying for you each day.

They turned out soo cute!! I say add some polka dots too! I like the idea of the white and green polka dots or...if you and Scott want different ones, add green and pink to yours and green and turquoise or something to his??

Stephanie said...

So cute! You've inspired me to do this too...I totally identified with the eating in front of the TV thing! I always tell my husband that "when we have kids, we are not doing this!" However, we always use our coffee table-which I hate-so now I'm inspired to go get some tv trays and spice them up a little! Thanks for the sweet words on my blog and for your creative inspiration!! It's fun to get to know you Kelly.

Your cutie pie TV trays have inspired me to give ours a face lift. You did a great job. Like everyone else, I think you should add the dots. However, Scott might disagree!
I have been thinking of you guys and praying for you today. I can't wait for the update!

I have absolutely no creativity in me. I'm impressed you thought to paint them. Ours are still the boring wood color. What kind of paint did you use? Did you have to put a "shiny" coat of something over the black paint?

Be sure and show us a picture of the completed product!!

Very cute Kelly. I love polka dots! You can't mess them up. Just have fun with them!!
