This and That

Harper and I had lunch with our friend Melissa today. It was a lot of fun. Melissa is pregnant with her little miracle baby in May. In a week or so - she and her husband are having a "gender reveal party" to share what they are having with all their friends. Everyone is supposed to wear pink or blue - whatever your guess is. I think that will be so much fun and I know which color I plan to wear!
Melissa gave me the prettiest scarf and this amazing necklace for my birthday. I did NOT expect her to give me a gift - so I was very surprised. I thought that was so thoughtful and I can't WAIT to wear that necklace (and the scarf!!)
Speaking of wearing.......for the last two years I have been wanting a pair of cowboy boots SO bad - mostly to wear with dresses for a fun look. I have not been able to find any I liked but I recently found a pair on e-bay for a great price and got them for a little birthday present to me. I got them yesterday and wore them today and I LOVE them. If you know me in person - you may start seeing them on me pretty much every day.
Harper has been refusing naps lately. She usually only takes a morning nap but she will NOT take one and would not take an afternoon nap either. I'm hoping it's just the holidays and that I can get her back on schedule. It may also be that she is VERY close to walking. Today she kept acting like she wanted to so bad and tried over and over but just couldn't make that first step. But she would laugh sooo hard every time she even thought about it. We are close.
Of course - she may not be sleeping now that I have started letting her drink diet coke.
(just a joke)
I'm trying to get out of a rut of eating chicken breasts every night so I tried a new recipe tonight. I'm a HUGE fan of Gumbo. I LOVE it! So I saw Paula Deen make this one day - it's a Gumbo Casserole (or as I told Scott "Gumbo Bake" because he wouldn't have eaten it if I said casserole). I thought it was really good. It doesn't taste so much like real gumbo because there was no roux but it had similar ingredients and was really good. I put the recipe HERE.
(and I'm sure some of you are going to ask me what Gumbo is - it's a soup common in the south, especially Louisiana, that has seafood or chicken, sausage, okra and rice. It is YUM-O!)

And finally:
I just wanted to briefly share that one of my resolutions for 2010 is I’m changing a few things about my blog. I mentioned this yesterday and it’s nothing earth shattering - just a few personal adjustments. I started my blog to “scrapbook” my life and that is still my main goal. The great thing that has come out of it is being able to share my faith and to try to encourage others through prayer. I LOVE that! And I plan to continue that. I will continue my prayer blog but I’m also starting to work with www.prayergates.com and that has been an answer to prayer for me as a good way to keep up with and organize prayer requests. More on that in the next coming days!!!! (I’m also EXTREMELY behind on prayer requests (and praises) and hope to get it all updated by the first of next week!)
I will no longer be doing any giveaways or any form of product or website recommendations (there may be a VERY few exceptions). I never wanted to have a “big blog” and I have never sought out to increase my traffic. I found myself getting very stressed out about a lot of aspects of blogging this year and I feel like it has taken away time and energy from Harper and my life in general. So this year I’m just going to focus on documenting our lives. That’s what I’ve really tried to do recently but I’m just putting that back as the pure focus of my blog - my life and faith. That may mean that most of you quit following and I go back to having 10 readers and I’m okay with that. I do LOVE all of you who daily leave me comments. You have been an encouragement and a community to me as I stayed home this year. I’m thankful you have chosen to share our life with us.
I am going to do the Show Us Your Life Fridays because I think that is a great way to find other bloggers and it gives me a blog topic every Friday! Ha! And I will try to do as a part of that - show us your business once every few months so everyone can get their creative things featured. I love being able to help with that - but one on one - it has just become impossible.
I just wanted you to understand why some things might be different this year. There may possibly be an occasional giveaway through BlogHer if it is REALLY fun but other than that - I’m just going to write to preserve my memories and thoughts. I get SO many requests and I just have come to a point where I can’t keep up with them. Hopefully you can all understand that! I'm not trying to be selfish - I'm just trying to be a better wife and mother.

Good for you Kelly. Family should always come first. Please tell Harper that her friend Jackson is cheering her on all the way from Texas! He says that he just learned to walk a little more than a month ago (about a week after his first birthday) and he's having so much fun!

I won't stop reading regardless of what you change. Well, if you stopped sharing pictures of Harper, I might :)

I read so many blogs (like mine and others) that are focused on a niche so I enjoy just reading about your life - faith, baby, and all!

I have been following your blog since you were pregnant with Harper. You had also added my name to your prayer blog as we were TTC #3 for over 2 years. Very happy to say that #3 is 3 months old as of yesterday! Love your blog and how real you are!

The Taffs said...

you go! i personally enjoy reading about the everyday things of your family, not giveaways!

I'm actually happy to hear that'll you'll be returning to blogging about your family life. Several of the blogs I started out reading have gravitated toward giveaways and contests which is wonderful in its own right, but I admit that while I once ready them daily, I rarely check them now. Not that it really matters if I read their blogs...LOL...but it's more fun to read about families and life than giveaways!

Blessings to you,
Bonky's Mama

#1. I love that necklace more than life.

#2. Major props to you for being wise with your blog. What's funny to me is that I hardly read the recommendations/giveaways! I really like the documentation of your life anyway!

I've not really commented here much, but just wanted to encourage you because I love your blog!

Anna said...

This is exactly why I follow you!! You are so real on your blog, and you are such a great example to me as a wife and mother. I follow your blog because you are an encouragement to me, and you allow God to use you as an encouragement to all of us readers :). Can't wait to see pics of Harper's birthday party :).

I have never commented before, but just wanted to let you know that I think is great how you are defining what you want and don't want for your blog. I read your blog to hear about your life and faith. NOT FOR THE GIVEAWAYS. I don't read ANY blog for the giveaways, but just for the content. Thank you for sharing pieces of you life and faith with us!

That makes total sense! I am glad you are making changes to make your life less stressful and so you can focus on your family more. Nobody can blame you for that- and I bet you won't lose ANY readers!!

Best to you in managing your blog and family. I found you from one of your Razorback comments on another blog long time ago and have been reading faithfully ever since (even tho I could be your mom).
Thanks for sharing your life. Blessings to you in the new year...and GO HOGS!
PS. I made your green bean bundles for our Christmas side dish and they were a hit with the family!

Great idea Kelly! And now that you can print your blog and make it in to a book..it's a great way to scrapbook! I would rather read about what Harper is up to than a giveaway any day!

I was hoping you weren't changing THE BEST part :) Good for you for sticking with what works for YOU!

Good for you. Blogging is just an outlet for me...hope you enjoy your changes and continue to enjoy and delight in that precious baby. Come link up with Arkansas Bloggers. The link for that is on my blog. Until I actually figure out the best way to organize everyone, I will have everyone link up with Mister Linky. There aren't any obligations. It's just a way to get to know fellow Arkansans. Happy New Year! (Dr. Hinton's mom)

You go girl! Before I switched blogs, I felt compelled to always contribute something to my blog & you are right, it's very stressful! I'm proud of you for taking a stand & doing what you need to do. Don't be stressed. Take care of yourself & your adorable family! You won't be losing any readers - we all love you too much! :)

I agree--good for you!!! :) If I had your job, wife & mother, then that's what I'd do! Of course, if I was a wife & mother, then my blog would probably get more than 2 readers...ha!

Anyway, you are an encouragement to me, Kelly, and I enjoy reading your blog. I absolutely love babies, little girls specifically, because I've always wanted one of my own. So far the Lord has not seen fit to provide that, but He has been so faithful to provide what He knew I needed--tough love, grace, good friends, good therapy & time with Him...which, of course, is ultimately what this is all about anyway!

Hope you have a great New Year! :)

If I were in your shoes I would do the same! I love your blog because I like to read about you, your family and your faith. It has nothing to do with giveaways, product reviews, etc etc. I will still be reading faithfully!

Where can I get a necklace like that and what brand boots did you get?

Love those boots! I was just saying the other day that I wanted a pair of cowboy boots. I love everything you blog about but your daily life & pictures of Harper are my favorite. She is so stinkin' cute!! I will still be reading no matter what you choose to talk about! I enjoyed reading about your resolutions as I just posted what mine are! :)

Good for you Kelly! I normally just read and follow along but I just wanted to say that I am glad you are making life easier for yourself so that you can truely enjoy the blessings that you have. Keep it simple...besides toddlerhood might really cramp your blogging style. :)

Kelly, I stumbled upon your blog a week before Harper was born while we were church hunting. It has been a pleasure to "get to know" you through your writing. I applaud your choice to keep/return to the purpose you started it in the first place. I've been apart of the digital scrapping world for about 5 years, and I have had several people ask me to design and get more involved -- but that's just the problem -- there's only so many hours in the day, and my first responsibilities are to God and my family. And when my family "suffers" because I'm feeling obligated to blog readers, that's NOT a good thing. As wonderful as all the people in blog-land are -- and they ARE wonderful -- my family must come first. You put it so well, and thank you for putting YOUR family first as an example for the rest of us.

Jenny said...

I AGREE! Good for you! Although my blog is teeny-tiny compared to yours (!), I came to the same decision several months ago- my blog is for me and if others want to share then I love it!!! Happy New Year to your beautiful family!!!

Just so you know, I've never ever entered a contest on a blog. That's not the reason I visit blogs. I visit blogs because I love to have a peek into people's lives and steal, I mean share their ideas!

Hi Kelly!
I have loved reading/following your blog since you were pregnant with Harper! I am from the Midwest and you actually have me thinking about moving "down south" someday! I don't have a blog, but would love to start one - for the same reasons - but it's really not that popular around here yet. I have some specific questions for you, but I don't see your email posted (Mine is cjmmomz@yahoo.com) Don't feel like you have to respond, but I'd love to get your opinions on a few things! I totally understand if you don't have time - I'm a mom of 3, and I know that time is precious! I will continue to read everyday - and thank you for being such an inspiration to me and others around the world!

I have read your blog for a very long time, and I am so glad to hear that you will continue to blog. I have a very small blog for family and even I get pressure sometimes to update often and some days it is just too much, I can only imagine how it must be with a large blog.

I LOVE the boots! You always find such great things on ebay! I can never find a thing! haha

Kelly,

a week or two ago, i googled a bit around and suddenly, no idea how, i entered your blog.
I started reading and just couldn't stop.
When i finished the frontpage, i dug into your archive, and started reading in chronological order. I'm now up to august 2008, and also read januari/februari 2009,
still much left to read ;).
You're such a sweet and loving person, it's so wonderful to read about your loving family
and love for god.
I read about the pain and dreams, but also about the faith.
And now there is a beautiful little Harper! Who is almost turning one year old!
Well there is so much to say, but it's way past my bedtime, and before 2010 starts i just wanted to post a little comment.
I live in the Netherlands (that's why my English is so poor, haha) and the time here is now 1.45am, so actually it's already 31th of december. I have to get up early in the morning,
take my daughter to 'opa en oma' (my parents), get to work en then celebrate 'oud en nieuw'
(new year).
When i'll be home in a couple off days, the first thing i'm about to do on my computer is to have look at your blog. So with that i just want to wish you all the best in 2010. A year full of love, laughter, health and happiness.

God bless.

Love,
Kelly & Britte (NL)

ps. i hope you understand the things i wrote. My English isn't that good (reading is much easier).
My dutch is so much better, haha. Well i'm now off to bed, good night!

Kelly,
It is completely understandable that you desire to make your primary focus your faith and your family! I doubt a single reader will stop following your blog because you've chosen to discontinue giveaways. I fully believe you are such an encouragement to SO many folks, and I know God will continue to use you and your blog in a mighty way. I have such great respect for you in making this big adjustment, and I wish you all the best. Looking forward to continuing reading all about you and your precious family!! Wish we lived closer...we would so be friends. And Dawson and Charlie could play together!!

I know I'm not the first one to say this but I gotta say it....I'll be 40 in February (gasp) and my boys are 13,12, and 9. They are with me for just a few short years now and that just tears me up. Please treasure this time with your family. It really is a gift and they don't stay at that age forever. Enjoy each and every day with that sweet girl. I'd give anything to have my kids for just a day at each age. I miss them. Cherish it.

You are loved. Your family is first. You are so doing the right thing. I'm proud of you!

Big hugs!!!

I love your new header! I think it's great that you are going back to just documenting your lives - those are always the posts that I come here to read anyway. To be honest, I don't really like it when my favorite blogs become all "commercialized" with the giveaways and coupon codes and all. They are nice deals, but I am interested in the family and not businesses. It will be great to see more pictures of H's little life!

It's not selfish at ALL! I think it's smart. The time flies so quickly with little ones, take the time to enjoy it and write things down! I don't know how some of these women keep up with the huge blogs. You know something is gotta give with their lives somewhere. Happy 2010!

It's the "every day ness" of your blog that keeps me reading. Takes me back the (few) years ago that I had a toddler and newborn issues. Mine are 11, 9 and almost 7 but I love hearing from you about your adventures. Your faith is also wonderful. To watch you grow and challenge us is what it is all about. Thanks for sharing. You are a blessing by just being you. Isn't that what our mom's always told us. You will have at least 11 readers! Jennifer in Southeast, NC

I think it is so wonderful that you always put your family first! I don't think you're being selfish at all by not "commercializing" your blog. In fact, to me it appears that you are the complete opposite of selfish. I can see what an amazing mom you are and you are such an inspiration to me in so many ways! Thanks for sharing your life with us!

Hi Kelly - I just wanted to let you know that my son went through a sleep revolt with some naps and disturbed sleep at night too right before he started walking (He just turned 1). The more I read it was explained that it was normal for babies to have disturbed sleep just before their next big milestone! Hope this helps! Happy New Year!

That is great! I was beginning to wonder if most people were reading for the giveaways...

I agree that it's so important to put God first. Blogging is just a fun afterthought in the grand scheme of things. :) Some people wouldn't blog if it wasn't for the perks, but it's not about that.

I completely agree with your decision about your blog (not that it matters what I think, but I'm being supportive!).
