Breaking Free!!!

Today has been so great!
The weather is beautiful and this may be our only good day for awhile so Harper and I got out for her first official shopping trip.
This is her this morning in her runner up Easter dress. I got this precious little dress for $12 off ebay. It has matching bloomers. But I think it looks springy so she can wear it to church another Sunday. I think she looks cute in blue!
We have a nice outdoor mall here in town so we got out and walked around. We only went in a couple of stores........we mainly just walked. Harper did pretty good - only a little bit of screaming. Going shopping with a baby is a WHOLE new experience. It's hard to look for long and you never know when a screaming fit will happen. And you have to scout out places to change diapers or feed. But it was SO nice to be OUT! We almost went to T J Maxx but as soon as we walked in the door she had a meltdown so we'll save that for another day. We came home and rested and our friends Kacy and Wells called and wanted to know if we would like to walk!
This is a horrible picture but Harper and Wells had their first meeting and date today. Harper screamed through half of it and slept through the other half. I'm not sure if there will be a second date if she keeps that up. ha! Actually I don't even think they knew the other one was around but it was nice for Kacy and I to get out and enjoy the sunshine and go home with two sleeping babies!

Because I've had such a nice day and the weather is so pretty - I just have to share today that Jesus is my JOY!!!! No matter the circumstances in my life - I have an inner happiness and peace that comes from the joy that being a Christian gives me.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
(I HEART that verse!)

I had already decided that this was going to be my song for the day. I'm a BIG fan of hymns and I love this version of "Jesus Paid it All" done at Passion in 2006. And then I was reading Mandi's blog and she mentioned the same thing. So neat!

ALSO - go here to see about an awesome give away of a little jumper or jon jon from Cotton Candy tutus!!!

I'm also wondering:
Where is the strangest place you have ever had to change your child's diaper or nurse?????

I had to change Jordan on the side of the interstate one time when we were traveling. There were no towns for miles and she was STINKY!!! Our car was packed, so I changed her in my lap....it was difficult to say the least!!!

I had to nurse my oldest standing up in a grocery store bathroom! She was throwing a fit, and that was the only place I could think of to go to - now that I think about it though, I should've just went to my car and nursed her - O well.

Love your blog by the way! :)

Love the runner-up dress! I can't imagine how sweet the winner is going to be! Glad you got to be out and about today...it's so good for the soul!

I've had to change AND nurse my daughter, Riley, a few times in a Target dressing room. Many times in the car in the parking lot. I love having an SUV because I can just lay her down in the back and get the job done. It's a lot easier now that she takes a bottle. I know the first few times venturing out with the baby can be stressful, but keep doing it. It gets much easier, and starts to just become normal.

I had to change my daughter in the trunk of my car once in a parking lot. People kept passing by and I was wondering if the cops were going to show up thinking I was going to leave her in there.

I have been reading your blog since your sweet little daughter was born. Just thought I would come out of lurkdom to answer the strangest diaper changing place. I once changed my oldest child's diaper on top of the trunk of my car. I had a smallish car that was completely packed with baby gear heading to see family in AR.

I had to nurse on a toilet in a stall at the airport once and it was very uncomfortable... You know, the long handle thingy sticking in my bad, it was horrible at the time, but funny now that he is almost 11!!!!

Love that dress on Harper, your right blue looks really good on her! YAY for getting out! The strangest place to change a diaper, hasn't happened yet, but wait till you go to the park when Harper is potty trained and there are no bathrooms and you have to take her behind a tree! With no TP and if there are ducks, then I suggest just going to the nearest McDonalds's!!
Love this song too! LOVE IT!!

I have had to nurse and change diapers in many odd places...but when your baby needs something you just do it without thinking too much about it! I have nursed in church, resturants, closets, cars,...just the other day my husband and I went on a motorcycle ride for most of the day (our boys stayed with the grandparents) and I had to pump in a public restroom with women coming in and out but I didnt care bc I was hurting bad!

Love the runner up Easter dress!! I would've loved to have gone shopping with you two today ~ that way...you could've shopped and I could've walked around with Miss Harper!!! :) Maybe someday!

Sorry, no kids yet, as you know...but I'm hoping for some pretty funny stories someday!

Love you

Just wait till you take her out to dinner and she screams, a lot!! I get stressed out when we go places. I never know how she will act.

I am weird and don't like to nurse in public so I always either went to my car or in the bathroom, if they had a place to sit.

Unknown said...

I had to nurse in a bathroom stall at church. Our 1st was just a few months old and I "forgot" that I would need to nurse him during church and wore a dress instead of skirt & shirt. I had to unzip my dress...that was the 1st and last time that that happened.

I have changed many a diapers in my lap and the trunk of my car. As far as the strangest place I have ever nursed... was probably Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, AL. It was in my brother in laws office, but he was grossed out to say the least.

I tried to nurse my son in a moving car by leaning over his carseat on a family trip- my dad didn't want to stop! Um... and I used to pump on my way home from work everyday. Definitely not safe! I did find out that if you're trying to find a place to nurse, most maternity and baby stores have a special dressing room set up with a nursing/changing station, if you happen to be in a mall with one! I nursed in Motherhood Maternity many times!

Unknown said...

I have had to nurse in many places b/c he did not want to eat from the bottle. I have nursed in church, hallway at the hospital ( when I went with him for the checkup),park, car, fitting room at the store. When the baby is hungry and you are far away from home you just have to do it.
And remember there will be a lot of people looking at you. Just ignore them ;-)

Harper is so precious! That dress is sooo cute on her! Can't wait to see the Easter dress!!

You will be surprised at the places you will nurse and change your baby! I did it in various places too, including, like the previous commenter, Target's dressing room!!

Glad you got out, hope you get out a little more....

Strangest place to change Alise's diaper was literally an off ramp to Interstate 20!! OMGoodness! Cars were flying past us (even on the off ramp) and I just knew the back door of our car was going to go flying off any minute!! I was also afraid someone was going to run over me!!

Kelly, I think Harper is getting prettier everyday! You are so blessed! Enjoy motherhood!

I had to change Hudson at the zoo near the apes. A bathroom was nowhere to be found. Yikes! :-)

Glad you girls were able to get out for a little bit today. And as someone else posted, the outings do get easier, in time!

The strangest place I changed my son's diaper was at a Cal Poly Football Game, the restrooms had no changing tables for infants so my sister and I laid him on the cement floor, on his pants and sweater with her holding his head while we did a quick switcheroo! AND, he was completely soaked through his first outfit so we had to change his whole outfit while we were at it! I have also been known to change a diaper or ten in the trunk of the car while out on the town!! Haa!

I've changed Harbor in the floorboard of the jeep outside of Pizza Hut!

I nursed Brayden sitting on the toilet in the Cheesecake Factory bathroom- there wasn't a chair anywhere and he wouldn't nurse under my nursing cover that day- the worst was when someone else flushed a toilet and he SCREAMED!

I don't think it qualifies as that strange, but we have used the tailgate of our truck while hiking in the woods.

A word of warning, during a diaper change in a Panera parking lot, my son Christened me and the parking lot. Once you're out and about more, you may want to bring an extra change of clothes for yourself!

I have nursed everywhere (with a blanket in a corner or discreet location in public--can't just lift my shirt, ahh!) but the strangest place was in a bathroom stall when my son was 4wks old. I have nursed in many since then, but on this particular day a lady in the stall next door was, well, taking care of business. It was awful, awkward, and aromatic!

Melissa @ The Littlest Lobo said...

The strangest place I have changed a dipaer so far is on top of the toilet in an airplane. I laid out the changing pad and placed him on top. It was a poopy diaper so I decided to wash my hands before putting a fresh one on him. He was fine til we hit a bit of turbulence and he started sliding down while I was washing my hands! I had to hold him in place with my knee til I could get to him. Later my husband said "why didn't you use the changing station?", but I am positive there wasn't one in the bathroom I was in!

Susan D. said...

Love the dress ... I think light blue always looks pretty on girls. I have fed and changed my twins in a WalMart parking lot on the way back from a visit to the inlaws. It was actually OK and I just used the back of my suv to change them!

rmfox said...

I also am coming out of "lurkdom" to say the strangest and most difficult place I ever changed a diaper was in the airplane bathroom on the way to FL.. To make things worse, it was her first bout with the stomach flu. Blech!!! I have also nursed in the bathroom stall at the Outback Restaurant. Cozy!!

Harper looks GREAT!!!!

Maggie said...

Hi Kelly,

Very cute dress for Harper.

Don't be too discouraged about shopping with her. It will get easier.

You should appreciate this-I have nursed a couple times in the fitting room at Walmart! I am still a little timid about nursing in public, but I always have a blanket covering me up. It will get easier too.

Dressing rooms are fantastic for nursing! In fact I used the Target dressing room so often with my oldest the lady who was always working that area teared up when we moved out of state! Sad Huh! What can I say...I LOVE TARGET!

For diaper changes..i HATE the community changing tables, but when you have to you have to. When they are still small I much prefer finding a quiet spot and laying the stroller seat all the way down and just chaning in the stroller. My kids prefer that too!

Harper is GORGEOUS!!! Good luck finding what changing and nursing spots work best for you.

I don't know if this is necessarily strange, but my daughter was born in the fall, which is High School Volleyball season here in Wisconsin. My husband coached that year, so we went to lots of games when Alyssa was only a few weeks old. I nursed her in the car in the parking lot quite a few times, and changed her diapers in the bleachers a lot too!

Oh, the places I have nursed:
-while riding the kiddie train at the park
-the zoo
-the botanical gardens
-bookstores
-the middle of the mall
-church
-airplanes
-subways
-buses
-front seat of the car (while parked)
-walking around downtown near my house
-the library
-while chasing my son at the playground
-the steps of the Jefferson Memorial
-LACMA
-many, many restaurants
-a bar (don't ask...not as bad as it sounds)

etc, etc, etc-I don't worry about staying home to nurse, and with an older child, I can't seclude myself in public restrooms, nor do I want to! It takes some practice, but you will get better at doing it discreetly and gain so much freedom that way!

Kelly, Harper looks so ADORABLE and happy!! Heres a wierd thing, when my daughter was a baby, she used to start screaming in certain stores as soon as we walked in. I'd walk out, she'd stop. then her Dr told me that babies have very sensitive hearing, and a lot of the stores have those security systems that produce a very high pitched sound, and it literally will hurt some babies ears.
I avoided those places I knew would do that until she was older, or I would put little ear plugs in her ears this helped a lot.
Happy Spring!!

Cute dress! Asher once pooped on an airplane. I was by myself in the middle seat with him as a lap child. 18mo old. STRESSFUL. I had to change him on my lap with two people on either side! Why do they put moms in the middle seat?? Anyway I was sweating but I was extremely fast and the airplane neighbors didn't seem annoyed. (I wish airplane bathrooms had changing tables).

Have you tried a nursing shirt? They are the best! They keep you totally covered your tummy and top of your breast while you nurse. You can get them at motherhood maternity or gap maternity. I just nurse wherever I am...I am modest but nursing is such a beautfiul thing and I want to role model that you can nurse without showing "it" off.

When I took my son for his 4 week checkup I had to change his diaper before going into the office. We used the hall bathroom and believe it or not, in a pediatrician's office bathroom, there was not a changing station. I was not about to lay him out on the floor so I went into a stall and sat on the toilet and juggled changing him on my lap! He had a "dirty" diaper too so I had to be careful not to get any poop on my own clothes.

Kelly,
My daughter was sitting in an out of the way bench at the mall while she was nursing her 6 week old baby, COMPLETELY covered. The security guard came over and told her she would have to DO THAT in the bathroom! She looked him straight in the eye and said, "Do you like to eat your meals in a loud, stinky bathroom?" He never said another word and turned to leave when two teenage girls came up to him to ask directions. They had short-shorts on and a pierced navel. Their blouses were so low cut you could see that "other things" were pierced too. Did he ask them to leave, no! The irony
of this made me laugh out loud.
Some of my daughter's le leche friends (she's the Southern leader)heard about it through her blog and over 300 le leche members staged a protest at the mall. The Mall made a formal apology to my daughter and gave her and the baby a $300.00 gift certificate.
I was thrilled! That was her first baby now aged 10. She's had 3 more since then and never had any more trouble.
Thought you might enjoy this story.

I used to go walking in our local mall when it was cold outside but I had to get out of the house. She started screaming and I bolted into the nearest store (JC Penney's) and headed for the ladies dressing room to nurse her. Much to my surprise they were all full...so I headed to the MEN'S dressing room. I am sure as men walked in and out they were wondering what in the world was going on in the dressing room....Oh the things we do!

She is precious! I'm glad you had the chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine.

I have 3 and we've changed diapers in some strange places, but I think the horse trailer was the most unusual. Granted it was in the dressing room part, but you never think about changing diapers and Pull-Ups next to saddles.

Kelly-

It was great meeting you today at Bath and Body Works! I think the strangest place that I have changed kids and nursed would be the dressing room in Dillards. I would always choose the biggest stall and just spread my stuff out...it was actually kinda nice until I had someone come in the stall next to me and heard sucking noises coming from my little boy!
Harper's dresses are so beautiful!

Nursing:

In a Irish Pub in downtown Chicago (during St. Baldrick's event)

Walking through a busy pediatric oncology waiting room in NYC hospital. I had a cover up for the front but my shirt was hiked up in the back

Changing:

On the floor of an airplane galley - the bathrooms had no changing tables.

Like others - the trunk of the car

I hate changing diapers in public restrooms. So it was very common for me to change diapers in the trunk of the car, booth in a restaurant, my lap on an airplane, and even the shopping cart. But the craziest place was when my daughter was 9 months old she had a bad stomach virus while we were on vacation. Driving up Pike's Pike in Colorado we had to change her at the entrace to the park, and beside the rode several times.

I had to change my little girl on the floor of an airplane! It was the grossest thing on earth. I am a real germ freak and that was almost too much for me. Not all airplanes have changing tables in them. I had to put down a blanket in the gallery and change her on the floor. We were on a four hour flight and her diaper was leaking it was so full. I recommend changing before the flight and using a one size larger diaper for absorbency.

I am a very modest breast-feeder..I will try to find a private spot if there is one available but if there isn't and my baby's gotta eat, she's gotta eat! The strangest place I have nursed is was when my husband and I were buying a car when my daughter was 3 1/2 months old. You know how long it takes to buy a car and the car was solely in my name so I had to be there for every second of the deal. I nursed Emersyn while chatting finance terms with our sales guy and the finance manager, both men. I had my "hooter hider" of course, but it was still a strange occurance. The oddest place I ever changed a diaper was on my lap at Starbucks, we had an emergency. Don't judge me!! :) :)

With three breastfed babies I think I've nursed everywhere you can imagine. I was really young, covered myself very well and nursed my 6 day old daughter at the table in public. I was upset that I was expected to feed my baby in a dirty bathroom! I'm a little older now and probably wouldn't be so bold. However, I have said this many times...It's against the law to starve a child, not feed them!

On my lap on a small plane. I had to change 3 times and nurse. The worst part was I put my daugheter (3 months old at the time) in my lap to change her and realized I had to get something from my bag on the floor. Without thinking, I leaned over which pushed her head right into the chair in front of me. She screamed so loud, I panicked and picked her up to soothe her- again without thought, here. She was poopy and in picking her up, I got poo all over myself!!! I admit that I smelled her again toward the end of our flight and just saved it for her Daddy who was waiting for us!! She is now 15 months old and I am 20 weeks with her sibling and I have many places in mind to change both of them: car trunk, lap, doctor's waiting room, mall in stroller...you get creative!

Kelly, your daughter SO reminds me of my daughter Perri, who is almost 5 months and definitely not an easy baby. Shopping with her was getting impossible until I started putting her in her Baby Bjorn and now it is so, so much easier and I'm not anticipating the meltdown in the store. She loves being up and looking around in it too. Of course as soon as I put her back in her car seat in the car, half the time she falls apart but atleast she 'behaved' in public haha.

I have nursed in public bathrooms while sitting on the toilet. In restaraunts, cars, outside, dressing rooms. But I have to say sitting on the bleachers at the county fair takes the cake! Or maybe it was at Christmas time in the middle of the mall food court! I always wore nursing tops and had on my Hooter Hider. No one ever said a thing to me. They probably just thought I was cold all covered up with my cover. As far as diaper changes go the back of the car while stuck in traffic has happened numerous times while on vacation (fed her too). The floor of a restroom with the changing pad underneeth her, dressing rooms, but giving the opportunity I'd change her in her stroller with the seat fully reclined over any changing table! I know where it has been and what it has touched!
Good luck with nursing and diaper changes while your out!!

The strangest nursing was in the bathroom at the Tulsa State Fair. It is very interesting to hover above a fair toilet trying to ensure that your butt, hands, breast, or baby touch anything in the vicinity. The worst diaper change was in the middle of a college cafeteria. You never know when a baby will poop and it will go everywhere!

When I was 12 my sister was born. My mother was constantly carting me back and forth to piano lessons, twirling, etc. with this tiny baby! On several occasions when the three of us were in the car and my sister was screaming her head off, my mom and I worked out a system where she would put the car on cruise control and undo her nursing bra while I bundled up my baby sister and handed her to mom. Mom kept her hands on the wheel until I handed the baby off, then I would drive a little bit from the passenger side! (We called it "Latch and Roll") I KNOW! DANGEROUS! It was 1980 and seat belt laws weren't really enforced AND it was always on back country roads in Texas. BUT STILL STUPID now that I look back on it!

i nursed my 2nd child on the trolley in st. augustine... we thankfully were sitting in front of some grandparents that understood that ya gotta do things like that sometimes! :) i did not have a nursing cover then, and it was all i could do to keep the receiving blanket on me as we toured the breezy town. i also nursed that same baby in a cathedral (??some kind of church?) in savannah, ga. again, we were on a trolley tour, and she was so unhappy. for some reason, she wouldn't nurse on the trolley, so i was so relieved when we made a 5 min. stop at the church! last month, i changed two very stinky diapers in the kids' section of borders books. my two oldest were being SO GOOD looking at books, and my hubby was off in book-land somewhere, so i just took advantage of the lay-back feature of our stroller and changed amelia right there. of course- as soon as i started with the dirty duty, two employees walked by but didn't say anything. and ten minutes later, she had another dirty diaper, so i just changed her right there again! BUT i did not throw the dirty diapers away in their trash can! :)

Kelly,

First of all....the bathrooms at Dillard's are the BEST places to feed/change/calm a screaming baby. There are little lounges and diaper stations in all of the. And the handicapped stall is the perfect size to take a stroller in.

Now.. for the question.. I had to change my oldest daughter's dirty diaper in an airplane bathroom when she was 5 months old. We were flying from Tulsa to Vegas and had just taken off, so I couldn't just wait it out. I had to lay her on the toilet lid (I used a blanket under her and threw it away when we landed). Not fun!!!!

PS Isn't it fun finding out what colors your baby looks good in??

Cute dress and I know what it's like to walk with a screaming baby.

I was nursing my little man in the car in a parking lot and he doesn't like a cover over him so I was just watching the cars around me to keep guard and a little girl walked by my car, saw me nursing, pressed her face to the window and said, "mommy, what's she doing!" I almost missed a connecting flight in Atlanta and didn't have time to change my son's diaper before boarding the plane. Luckily, I was sitting in the very last seat of the plane so I changed him right on the seat of the airplane, in front of all the other passengers. Then, I practically threw him into the arms of a complete stranger so I could use the bathroom (I was traveling alone with him). I never thought I'd be the type to hand my baby off to a stranger, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

I had to change my son's diaper on the floor of an American Legion. We were there for a retirement party and they didn't have any place to change a baby. Harper looks so cute in that dress by the way!!

After breastfeeding all three of my kids for 17-22 months I can't even begin to think of all of the crazy places I nursed them. I do have two funny things about my nursing experiences though. I am a RN so everytime I ran into someone I hadn't seen for awhile and they would ask me if I was still nursing it would always take me a minute to figure out which nursing they were talking about.
The second funny memory is from when my 3rd child was about 10 months old I went to a 4th of July celebration with some girlfriends. Our husbands all had to work. Well, right before the fireworks my son wanted to nurse. It was pitchblack out so I did not bother to cover him up. My girlfriend started to take pictures. After the 2nd or 3rd flash my little guy latched off to see what the bright lights were. So we have these wonderful group shots with smiling kids, including my son. You can guess what else was in the photo! Let's just say the photos were not PG! The best part is I had no idea. I was just smiling away too!

Girl it's so good to see that Jesus is your joy today and forever! It's amazing what He can do in our lives if you just let him! Friend, we need to meet... soon!

I wish I had a strange place to tell you I had changed diapers and nursed, but Im not quit there yet. Give me 8 more weeks and we can share stories!

First of all I want to say I LOVE that version of Jesus Paid It All! Our church choir is going to be singing this song on Easter Sunday!

Okay, I think that the weirdest place that I have nursed my daughter was when I was shopping at the mall. While I was walking, I just threw a blanket over her and latched her on. I then just continued my shopping. It was a little tricky, but at least I got to shop and she was happy. Oh, and I went to Disney Land, so I had all sorts of interesting nursing situations there as well! :)

Harper is such a cutie and I have to say (not to be mean) I love seeing her in an outfit without her name on it :)

I refused to nurse my son in a bathroom, so I got many odd looks in several places ... haha! I think the strangest place I nursed him was at a picnic table in a rest area. He was born in winter in Michigan, and we were visiting in Florida so it was the first time he had ever felt fresh air and sunshine on his little face... he was a bit distracted and confused by it at first :)

As far as the diaper change... hmmmm.... I guess that would be in a booth at a restaurant. They didn't have a changer in the bathroom and it was too darn cold (Michigan winter) to take him to the car. Oh well.. not MY fault the place didn't cater to messy diaper wearing babies.

Thanks for sharing your blog. I love seeing how God is working through you and your family.

I nursed my son in an airport bathroom on a toilet (I was not actually going to the bathroom, I just wanted a private place to sit). The toilet flushed the whole time because I had to keep shifting to get comfortable. LOL

Kelly,

Loving this week's theme! Glad you guys got a chance to get out. I know what you mean about having to stop for feeding and diaper changes but it just gets easier as they get bigger.

Now about nursing, Audrey is almost 13 months and I have no clue when we're going to call it quits. On Saturday, Hubby and I took the girls to a Dodger game in L.A. It was a 7 p.m. game so Audrey was started getting fussy around 8 p.m. I knew that she was sleepy and the only thing that would make it better was you know what. I had to get up the courage to throw the blanket over my big baby and nurse right there in the stadium with 30,000 people around me. I was so proud that I didn't care what other people thought. I was discreet and I don't think anybody had a clue what I was doing! Definitely not something I would have felt comfortable doing with Alyssa 4 years ago, but I guess the confidence comes over time! Hope you guys have a Happy Easter!

We often changed our daughter in the trunk of our car. Sometimes that was the only place we could find and at least we knew it was clean!

I spent many boiling hot afternoons stuck in my car in a parking lot, with the air conditioning on high. My daughter hated driving so much, I had to rescue her from her car seat and nurse in the backseat JUST so we could make into the store. She screamed the whole time in there, too. My husband did all our grocery shopping for over a year.

I changed many poopie diapers in my car! Once, I changed a diaper blow-out in my lap, in the backseat of the car, at the Golden Gate Bridge. I was pouring rain and we just had no other place to do it. The car smelled REALLY GREAT after that one.

Those little forgotten memories make me happy these days are behind me! My high-maintenace girl is now four, and even though she's still high-maintenance, now at least she loves to shop and travel.

I got to be an expert on nursing in public by the time I had my third! The first two I nursed in places like the bathroom of La Madeliene and a shower stall at the gym but by the time I was to the third - I wore a tank top under my shirt all the time because I was WAY more self conscious about my tummy than my boobies :) so I could be completely covered and I would just hold and nurse him EVERYWHERE - my oldest daughter's entire 5th birthday every picture is me holding what looks like a sleeping baby (really nursing), gymboree, the oil change place - you name it. I never covered him - he hated it - but the way I layered I could have entire conversations with people and they never knew I was nursing! Only tricky part was putting myself back together after he stopped. :)

Hope you have a great Easter weekend.

This may horrify many people but I had to change my daughter's "blow out" during takeoff on the food/lap tray attached to the seat in front of us. My husband was under the impression that they had no changing tables in the bathroom so we laid her changing pad down and stripped her clean! Thankfully she was only 3 months old so she it wasn't that noticeable!
P.S. Love your blog, and love that little Harper;)

I had to nurse my oldest son in the restroom at an airport. It was a busy airport and every time someone flushed the toilet, he would jump and we would start all over. The best was nursing in the dressing room at the mall. My son was probably 6 weeks old so I was new at this. (I later found a more private "nursing" room at another department store) We were doing our thing and two teenagers came in the dressing room next to us and were trying on clothes. My son was a very aggressive eater and was loud. After a few minutes one of the girls said, "What is that noise?" I sat in silence and let them wonder. I still laugh at that today. He is 15 now!

I changed my daughter Payton in a both at a resturant and the back of our car on the way to the beach on the hwy! When she was a newborn, we changed in her in our car (resturant didnt have a changing table)and thought she was done pooping. Boy were we wrong! Projectile poop everywhere! My dad was with us and just laughed let us take care of it. :)

Don't know if it's the strangest but, I know you will like this story! We are huge Auburn fans and when our youngest daughter was 2 months old, we took her to the AU-Arkansas football game in Arkansas. We always go b/c Fayetteville is the closest AU comes to us! Anyway, I had to nurse her several times in the bathroom. EWWW! But, I put down a shirt, sat criss-cross applesauce, nursed, and DID NOT TOUCH A THING! :) Not sure if I would do it again but it was a fun day!

Love the blue dress! Harper looks so cute!

I have nursed in lots of "fun" places...bathroom stall at the park, in the car in a remote parking lot off I-20 in Alabama, at my son's gymnastics class, and bible studies to name a few. Oh, and I've pumped in the car lots of times:)

Tracy said...

Definitely the most difficult place to nurse was on the plane...being so cramped and all and trying to hide everything. When my firstborn was 5 weeks old I flew to Michigan and after nursing him the guy across the row said, "I'm next." It took me a while to figure out what he meant, but after I did I never looked over that way again.

Anonymous said...

I haven't read any other comments, so someone has probably already said this, but the absolute BEST place to nurse in public is in dressing rooms in department stores. You get some privacy, it's not gross like a bathroom stall (although, I've certainly done my fair share of nursing on a toilet!!!), and the sales people are usually really nice about you going in there to do it. While you're at it... do a quick diaper change and you're done!!!

Unknown said...

My diaper change place isn't that strange because it was the backseat of my car. We were going to interview a potential babysitter, though, and she pooped again during the middle of the diaper change. Miraculously, I caught the poop in a wipe. I was so amazed at my skills! :)

We also took our daughter to Hawaii when she was 6-months old (I wouldn't recommend it) so I had lots of weird breastfeeding moments there. I fed her all over creation. She still wasn't eating food at that point.

At nine weeks, I feel like I've already nursed my son everywhere! But so far the strangest is on a bench outside church while the sermon was going on. Palm Sunday service was so crowded they used the cry room as overflow seating and it was full. Blah! So I walked out of the santuary and nursed him and changing his diaper on the bench outside. I didn't want to go to the nursery because we're on Dr. Sear's delayed vaccine schedule so no nurseries until after three months. I thought people passing by would judge, but they all stopped to talk to us!

Mandy said...

I'm so glad you got to go out with Harper! It must have felt like such a victory! As far as diapers/nursing goes, I've changed a diaper in a folding chair in a very dark auditorium at a dance recital once. The chair kept folding back up and it was a very dirty diaper. Once we were buying a car and it was time to nurse, but they were cleaning our old AND our new car, so I balanced on the ring of the toilet seat in the bathroom. Interesting. :) BTW - the bathrooms at the Promenade (like the one across from Charolette Russe) have a GREAT changing table, granite actually, and a nursing room equipped with glider and ottoman. They are actually very nice. Congratulations again on your first shopping trip with your new shopping buddy!

I have nursed Brody is so many parking lots. Seriously, it's out of control. When we are out running errands I always take my nursing cover, which Josh calls my "hooter hider", and nurse in all kinds of parking lots!

I have never changed him in a strange place except when we go to Benton I refuse to change him in the bathroom at the gas stations we stop at. I always change him in the car. Much cleaner!

Most DIFFICULT diaper change would be when we were in a small rental car on vacation and had our car completely packed with luggage, groceries and two carseats. Our son decided to poop, so we had to take a bunch of groceries out just to change him on a little bity space of the floor board! :)

Nursing...I decided to nurse after church once because most every one was gone and the lights were dim. My husband and I were sitting there when this man came up and started talking to us forever. When I had to take my daughter out from under my breast cover, it was so awkward because I don't think the man realized she was even under there and what she was doing until right then. He seemed embarrassed, which made me slightly embarrassed as well. Ha!

My sister in law and I had babies just one month apart...in the same hospital with some of the same nurses even! And, we're married to identical twins!!!! Definitely something we did NOT plan but a wonderful blessing!

We spent a lot of time together during our maternity leaves...I'll never forget the day we ventured to Walmart of all places. We were shopping one minute the next we had two screaming babies in the Walmart family bathroom. We both had stinky/hungry babies ACK! My little Jonah decided to have a blow out that used ALL of my wipes and my poor sister in law gave me most of hers. My nephew Kolbe went next...BLOW OUT #2! I went running through the store with Jonah in my armss (still crying), bought wipes through self checkout and ran back to my sister in law. There she was nursing a naked baby! We laughed and laughed for days after. The best part was the understanding mom who patiently waited through all of this and just smiled when we finally emerged from the only family bathroom!

It's not CRAZY, but I definitely know which stores have the best fitting rooms for nursing!! Kohl's is bad because the benches are at an angle with the corner, so there's nothing to lean up against. Walmart is only good if you can get the handicapped accessible rooms because the stroller won't fit in the others. Target is good. GAP at the mall is the best (the benches are plush!)... and on and on :)

I had to nurse my daughter in a dirty college bar's bathroom. We were visiting my husband's college for a football game. Lily was 3 months old and when she needed to nurse, my husband pointed me to a building and vaguely said there would be a place "in there." He pointed to this building neaby. I walked in and it was a bar! They had no ideas for me on where to go, Lily was wailing she was so hungry, and so I ended up feeding her standing up in a dirty bathroom stall. There was no other choice! I don't know the campus all that well and my baby couldn't wait any longer. Luckily, she won't remember any of it! We went back again this year for a game, I couldn't help but shudder when we walked by that bar.

I'm not a mother yet but I sure have had enough experience changing diapers!!!

A few years ago I traveled with one of the families I nannied for to the Bahamas with their 10 month old daughter. On the puddle jumper flight from Miami to the island Sammie had a MAJOR blow out.

Actually, when I first smelled it I thought it was the guy sitting next to me letting a gas bomb, though I'm sure he thought it was me! The plane was tiny and cramped, and we had to wait another (very long) 40 or so minutes until we finally landed in the Bahamas.

The blowup spread all the way to little Sammie's neckline and even got in her hair!

It was BY FAR the most disgusting and most ill-timed blow-out I have ever experienced as a nanny!!!

Um I've nursed in the car while baby was still in carseat. Does that count as strange? I guarantee it would have looked strange to anybody who could have seen but our windows are super tinted and we were in the middle of nowhere...my mom was in the drivers seat and kept a look out--My goal was to nurse my son to sleep and anytime I fed him then transferred him to his carseat he'd wake up and scream. So I tried to leave him strapped in. I sound like a nut I know but we'll try anything, won't we???? Love the cute bunny dress--definately one she can wear all Spring!

I was so modest before having my boys, but oh how things change with a nursing newborn.
When my firstborn son was 13 months my mom and I went to Savannah for a week and took him with us. He was an angel on all the tours and loves Paula Deen today, I think because of this trip. On her tour he had an explosion on the bus and I had to try and contain it without people knowing. I didn't have a change of clothes so at the first stop we found a children's boutique and hurried in and bought two smocked outfits. I had to change him on the sidewalk. What a mess, but the outfit was adorable.
My best nursing story is with my second son at Disney World. He was 11 months old and we were waiting in a mass of people for the fireworks. It was at the Halloween party and we were in our costumes and I was Wendy and had on a dress. I couldn't go anywhere and didn't have a blanket and he was tired and crabby and needing comfort. So I unzipped my dress and let it all hang out. Luckily it was dark until the fireworks started and then I was the show!

I have had so much fun reading these comments!

Harper is so adorable. I LOVE all her dresses.

I have nursed in so many places.I think you should just nurse wherever you are. I NEVER go to a bathroom to nurse. I just think that is a gross place for my baby to have to eat. I also have a 4 year old and 2 year old so it isn't always easy to leave places so I just feed wherever we are.
The strangest two places are probably either at a restaurant (sitting at our table) or at church (like sitting in the pew during worship).

This past fall the Prince and I were in a program at church. We pretty much just walked on the stage then back off, but we did it over and over all night, so we were at church for several hours for almost the entire week. I had to nurse him in the church office. The pastor has a big couch in the corner of his office so we were nicely hidden. Or so I thought...the second night, I peeked in the window in the door before opening it and noticed a mirror that had a perfect view of the spot I had been not-so modestly nursing the night before...nice.

I changed my son last summer on a table in the middle of a Burger King in North Carolina. We were on our way to the beach and the restaurant had no changing table in the bathroom. I figure maybe seeing a mom change her son's poopy diaper on one of their tables will give them an incentive to get one installed!

omgoodness. reading all these people feeding on a toilet sickens my stomach! I cannot imagine doing that and yuck, it just doesn't sit well.
I will never eat in a bathroom and will not feed a baby in one either... yes, I am 'one of those.'
I feed wherever I am, covered of course. I guess the strangest place was when we were getting a tour of the White House (after they had stopped giving them after 9/11) by Rep. John Boozman. Isaac was 2 months old and well, hungry... so I fed him along the way, enjoying all the many explanations offered by Rep. Boozman. If he thought anything of it, he sure didn't let on!
But after 4 kids... I'd say I've pretty much nursed anywhere and everywhere with most people having no clue. Only too nosy strangers who take it upon themselves to peek at my 'sleeping baby' and then are abruptly surprised to find baby isn't sleeping!

I'm a new mom as well and today was actually our first official shopping trip out. We had been to Walmart, but today we ventured out to the mall, lunch, and a couple of other stores with a friend. Boy was it tiring and a whole lot different than shopping used to be. BUt I loved every moment of it, especially when people stopped us to tell me how pretty my little girl is!!

I don't have much experience about changing diapers and feeding since I'm a new mom too. However, the day that we were going to have our baby's birth mom sign her consents, I chose to feed the baby in the car and then change her in my lap. Not easy at all, but we survived!!

I haven't really had any awkward places with changing diapers or nursing. I usually do both in the dressing room. Those are great places to get things done. And...every store usually has one. But, my number one advice, after nursing 3 children, is to pump on the way to where you are going and just have that bottle on hand for when you get to where you are going. That way, you are not wasting time in a dressing room. :)

becca said...

gosh Kelly, I'm thinking of all sorts of stories now...
I had to nurse Isaac while he was getting an echocardiogram. That one was a bit awkward, but he was hungry and wouldn't be still. The technician was actually grateful b/c she could then get on with the scan and just move around me!
Elijah just owns my most embarassing... I wasn't actually nursing, he was just a newborn when you are ALWAYS nursing and so, the 'bottle' was out and I didn't know it. He fell asleep on it and the doorbell rang. I went to the door and it was a preacher from the nearby ultra traditional church. Elijah woke up and the pastor commented at how cute he was, so I sat him up to show him off.
Well, that's not all I showed off. I lowered him back down and tried to pretend that I did not totally expose myself, though we both new I did. He was polite though and kept his eyes right on Elijah and then to me. It was pretty funny even at the time. I was mortified but I still don't know how I kept from laughing all the same.

My husband and I were in an attorney's office, waiting to get our wills done (b/c you know how they tell you to do such morbid things after you have a baby). We had to take our 14-month old b/c we did not have a sitter or family nearby and knew it shouldn't take long. And so we have our witnesses and the whole room ready to sign away, when we smell something awful. I reach down to check out Connor, whose playing in the floor with his toys and not only did he have a blow-out, it was on their carpet!! So my hubs & I changed him in their bathroom (no changing table of course) - one of us held his upper half and the other held the lower and wiped away. It was a nightmare. We returned to the office and the attorney said, "Normally when we do these, we close the door, but in this case, we'll leave it open!"

Kelly, I truly love reading your blog and have prayed for you and your sweet family! Happy Easter! May the blessings of our risen Savior be yours.

Oh, I love that dress!

I'm the mom of three, and the strangest place didn't happen until my last one--Joshua (about to be 1 year old next week). Last summer, my husband's grandfather passed away. Joshua was only a few months old. He did great until we got to the funeral home, which is where they had the service. A few minutes after we sat down on the front row, he let out a huge diaper explosion. My poor hubby had it on his hand, too, and I made a hasty retreat to the bathroom with baby. Joshua would not quit screaming, so I had to nurse him in there while I was rinsing out his outfit and trying to clean up the mess. Fun times...ha!

I have to say the strangest place that I had to nurse Alex was in the bathroom at the Razorback Stadium during Razorfest. Okay, I'm just proud of this one. When my youngest was only 2 months or so my husbands parents came to town and we went out to eat. Well Avery had to eat so I stayed in the car (front seat) while they all got the table etc... When I was almost done nursing her I also realized that she needed to be changed so being the multi tasker that I am, I continued to nurse her and managed to changer her at the SAME time. I'm not talking about just a quick wipe and thats that, it was poop people - multiple wipe poop! I was so very proud of myself for that! She never even stopped eating. Now that is talent if you ask me! :)

Very cute dress! I think most little girls look great in blue, brings out their eyes.

With 5 kids I have chenged and nursed in some wild places.

Nursed a baby in the carseat while sitting in a traffic jam, nursed another one while leaning against the wall of the mall, I couldn't go out of site because I had my 2 daughters with me and they weren't old enough to shop alone at the mall so I nursed waering my discreet Motherwear clothes..... love those!, sporting events and resturants.
As for diaper changes, on my lap at 36000 feet while flying, in the trunk, and on the bleacher at a football game.

an idea for the shopping trips.... I LOVED a babysling. I had several diffent kinds, some soft some structured. It kept my babies happier, closer and away from peoples germs and touching, I had my hands free and never had to worry that someone would try to snatch her.

The weirdest thing that I have done and only because I am so social and refused to be left out of anything becuase I had to pump/nurse. When I went back to work (a kindergarten teacher) we would plan once a week and all my girls would come in my room and I would pump behind my desk and the girls would set around my desk and we would plan for the next week....like nothing was happening I had the BEST team ever!

the NEIMAN MARCUS restaurant. NO baby changing facilities=probably not a good place to take children! i was having brunch with some friends after a girls overnight at a nearby hotel. daddy dropped her off on his way out of town, and she had on a horribly matched outfit. bless his heart, coordinating outfits is not one of his gifts (why, oh WHY didn't i pick out an outfit before i left??) i whisked her away to work some wardrobe magic out of the diaper bag...and had to change her on the bathroom floor.

Glad to hear you were able to have such a wonderful day! We were in the historic downtown part of our town doing some shopping with family that came to visit. Our daughter seriously needed to be changed (she does NOT like to have a damp diaper by no means!) and there were no bathrooms nearby or anything! We were in a little cooking store and thankfully it was a gorgeous day b/c she was changed alfresco on my lap while I sat on this statue of a pig laying on its back, ha! The nursing situation wasn't so strange as cramped! Between an infant car seat and a toddler booster seat in the backseat of a small car! Not to mention she was extremely fussy AND I had to attempt to stay covered! Not an easy task! =)

I have pumped while going down interstate 80, pumped in a "perkins family restaurant" bathroom - all to be sure to keep the milk going and feed my son. My daughter was the recipient of milk pumped at a wedding, where I was maid of honor and fed in a dressing room at The GAP. I love hearing your story and witness! God Bless you and your family.

Beautiful dress!
My first shopping trip with my baby was Target. It was very eventful. He screamed most the time and I tried to feed him a bottle while pushing the basket. I learned how to shop during nap time now! We go out a couple times a week and he is used to it now and does much better.

i nursed in the Creation Museum's (Kentucky)Planetarium- during a SHOW! At least it was dark and everyone was looking up... I swore i would never be one of those mom's but i would rather do that than get the dirty looks of a screaming infant during the show!!! Trade Offs! Love your blog!

PS I also had to pump in the bathroom of a Beth Moore Conference. That was fun (no). At least it was a private bathroom and had an outlet. Jesus was looking after me :)

I had to nurse my daughter Kansas while I coached my volleyball team at a the Junior Olympics. A parent was watching her for me at first but the match took so long that she starting screaming....I threw a blanket over me and nursed her and continued to coach! :)

Have a Happy Easter!

Oh my! I have nursed over the carseat on the interstate on mutiple occasions, in an office on a visit to work, an outside picnic (while following the 2 year old)-bathrooms and changing rooms galore! You'll get the hang of it, and soon it won't be any big deal...then she will start getting distracted while eating and forget to unlatch- ouch!

As far as the diaper changes- much like the others, the trunk of my car, the stroller laid back, the floor of dressing rooms- even standing up on the counter at a farm stand we went to! Some advice is to throw an old beach towel, and extra t-shirt (for you) and a change of clothes for the baby in the trunk of your car. That way you are prepared for just about anything. The towel is great for changing in the trunk, or on the grass, etc. Plus, once they aren't in the carrier carseat, I would throw the towel over the big carseat so it didn't get too hot (gotta love alabama summers)

And I highly reccommend a sling! Its the only way I would get through grocery shopping with a 2 year old and a little baby! Love the blue dress! My girls are starting to resist smocking...so dress her while you can!

I had to nurse my daughter on the south lawn of the White House! (Mortifying then, but makes a good story now.) We were there for the Easter Egg roll and my daughter had a meltdown as soon as we walked in the gates. She refused her bottle, so I found as private a spot as I could, whipped out the nursing cover, pulled my coat around both of us, and fed her on the spot. I can't wait to share that with her when she's older. :)

I have been reading since Harper's birth and had to comment today...

I was a 'shy' nurser until we took our 6 month old son to Washington DC to visit family. I quickly had to overcome my shyness/modesty and feed my screaming baby regardless of where we were!

I nursed in front of the Washington Monument, in a line in front of the White house, but my strangest place was probably on the Subway on the way to our hotel from the Washington DC fireworks on the 4th of July. Let's just say there were about a million people, a lot of stares, and I was pretty much sitting on a strangers lap. Good times!

the trunk of my car- the outside that is. at first it was strange, but it became a great and very convenient stop. i got lots of looks, but oh well.

love the dress! there is nothing better than a bishop smocked dress. at least in my opinion.

I once nursed in the middle of the aisle at Michael's. I just had to whip out the boob, nurse quick and move on. With a 5 month old and a 2 year old you have to be willing to show some skin! :) Ha ha!

What a fun question!
The craziest place I have nursed a baby is on The Great Wall of China. I have also nursed while running to catch a flight...
I have changed diapers everywhere and it is actually funny how much it doesn't bother me anymore! I think the most challenging diaper change was once we were getting onto a flight and we had to take a bus to our plane. While on the bus (a short ride), my daughter had explosive diarrhea and it was starting to leak out. She couldn't wait until we got on the plane, so I had to change her on my lap with people ALL around me - we were packed into that bus like sardines. I was SO thankful that I had a lot of wipes with me and someone was nice enough to let me use their seat for me to sit while I changed her.
Good times!!!

I had to be away from Jackson for a whole day to be in the house party of a wedding when he was 7 weeks old. So I got to pump in the brides cabana at the wedding place while the pictures were being taken. There was nowhere else to go. While I was doing that, the brother in law's whole family (men and women) came in and a little boy came over to me and said, "What's she doing?" I was covered up, but it was one of the most embarrassing experiences of my life!

This has to be at the top of my most embarrasing moments! I was nursing Lauren in a parking lot...at the very back parked by MYSELF when an ENTIRE troop of boy scouts pulled up and a van of them parked on EACH SIDE of me! I was beyond mortified and now have to face the laughs of me flashing an entire troop of boy scouts!! Bet they got a life lesson on that outing! Tenille

It's not a strange place to nurse but ends with a funny story to tell. I was nursing my second daughter, Sophie, in the front passenger seat of our SUV at the softball park. My husband plays church softball and the baby had to eat before his game started. Anyway, somehow my then 2 year old daughter and 5 year old niece bumped the gear shift into drive while they pretended to drive. We rolled down into a small ditch only to be stopped by a truck parked next to us. I had to quickly jump in the driver seat (baby attached) and hit the brakes. It was pretty funny since noone was hurt. The full story is on our blog dated May 31,2008. My oldest still says "I don't want to drive the car in the ditch anymore-ha. Love all of Harper's Easter pictures and dresses. Girls are so much fun to dress. Thanks for including all of the songs too. Elizabeth

I nursed on a golf cart while my husband was golfing...very weird and kinda awkward but totally surprised myself that I could do it! Another time on a bench at an outside mall and many times in my car! Your daughter is so precious and I love "stalking" your blog!! Reading it makes my heart happy!

Well we live near NYC and we were stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel once and our son (now 9) was screaming and screaming and I was too afraid to take him out of the car seat, so I leaned over the carseat and nursed him that way while holding a blanket to the window. What can I say he was about 6 weeks old, I was a new mother and realize now we were just sitting not moving taking him out of the car seat would have been easier!

My daughter was a very distractable nurser so when we were out, I usually just took her to the car, sat in the back seat, got out Boppy and away we nursed. At least when we were in the car I didn't really have to worry about covering up!

I have many diapers in odd places...back of the suv, across the backseat at a truckstop (while my husband scrubbed a poopy carseat) etc. The worst was 2 separate occasions she pooped through her clothes in the car on a trip back from Iowa. We had to stop at Culvers and change not only the diaper, but the whole outfit. One time I didn't realize until I had her undressed what had happened, had to put her diaper back on and go back out to get new clothes. Thank goodness we have now discovered overnight diapers for long car trips to avoid clothing poop-throughs!

love the blue dress.
i have changed a lot of diapers in my lap because places don't have changing tables in restrooms. so right out in the open in an eating establishment has to happen. what other options are there? changing her while sitting on the toilet?

i also nurse just about anywhere, except church (i'll take her to the nursery or entry and do it). i'm pretty discreet and i doubt anyone (except my husband who gets embarrassed easily and doesn't like to draw attention) knows i'm doing it.

i've even done it while shopping in walmart while she was in her sling carrier.

I just changed my 2 yr. old grandbaby's diaper in a port-a-john last weekend. We were at a festival with roads blocked off, parked a mile away, and all the downtown stores were closed. The streets were so crowded and umbrella strollers don't recline. She stood on top of the toilet lid and I changed her upright. Then we Germ-xed BIG time. LOL

I pretty much do whatever where ever, but the strangest place I've changed a diaper is probably on my lap in the middle of a college football game. I probably grossed out the college kids around us, but oh well.

As far as nursing, again I pretty much nursed anywhere. But the funniest to me was the zoo because I kind of felt like one of the momma animals.

If you don't have one, get a nursing cover! I didn't have one with my first and it was much harder to NIP. But with my second, I've nursed while eating in restaurants, in the middle of the malls seating area, just anywhere without worrying about others around me.

Don't know that I've commented before, but I check in mostly to see any new prayer requests.

I've changed my son in the trunk of the car, and I've also changes my kids in the stroller when we've been on-the-go (being touristy in big cities, for example). Strangest places I nursed my daughter was probably the Chick-Fil-A play area. My son was too little to be there on his own, and my daughter was HUNGRY! It was more private than right there in the dining area, and I don't like the idea of using a public restroom.... Mostly nursed in the car if I was out and about and she got hungry.

I had to change my baby, Ripken, on the side of the road on I-85 while AAA changed my flat tire. And it wasn't an ordinary diaper change... it was a complete blow-out, running out of his diaper, all over his pants, and down the leg!! Two blow-outs at the same time!! (Ripken and the tire!)
Of course, then he wanted to nurse so I had to climb into the AAA van and nurse him while the mechanic finished changing the tire. He could hardly look me in the eye after that!

Great gobs of bunny rabbits! That's a hand smocked dress! Keep that and give it to your grandchildren someday. I smock and know what I'm talking about, and it would take me probably 30 hours to smock and sew that dress.

And the girl inside the dress is priceless, too!

I was so relaxed reading your day with Harper. It gets easier going shopping with the kids once you get your schedule down. I've gotten my routine down with my three boys, pushing a double stroller through those tiny aisles. Secretly, I think "certain" stores don't rally want us mommy's in there with tots and strollers, LOL!

Strangest place? I've had to change my son's diaper at a Japanese Restaurant in the middle of a pier (too far from parking) who's bathroom had NO CHANGING STATION on the bathroom sink table. Luckily I brought sanitizing wipes, my very big bubble jacket and changing mat. Definitely an ordeal, took me an extra 30 minutes for set up and break down of my very own special changing area for my then 2 month old son. NEVER AGAIN! HAHA!

I've definitely done the diaper change on the lap thing many times -- not that hard (as long as it's not poopy:). I just had to do it at Quizno's yesterday, since there was no changing table in the restroom!
The strangest place I've nursed is standing up in a gross bathroom in a restaurant -- I went in there for some privacy and realized there was no where to sit (duh!), so I just stood. Later that week, I stood outside nursing her as I waited for some friends to be ready for a walk...it's not so bad!:)

Oh yeah, dressing rooms are the BEST place to go nurse if you're out shopping -- a place to sit and have privacy...and an excuse to try on some clothes?:)

I've breast feed my baby while putting my 2 yr old on the toilet at the same time, also while on a trip and my 1st needing feeding my dad who is an avid pilot and airport freak, stopped the car just short of the next town at an old country airport for me to feed Jake in the car while he walked around and looked at the planes on the air strip.

My first daughter was about 4 months old and we went to Paris, France and I had to change her so we found McDonald's and their bathroom. It didn't have a changing table or area so I had to do it in the bathroom stall. You could NOT fit two people in the bathroom stall. I had to put her on her blanket and on the toilet seat and change her, while I was standing out of the stall. She screamed the whole time. Horrible!

A football stadium, Kelly. While 80,000 fans roared for their team just outside the bathroom door, I found an awkward standing position in which to nurse my three month old. Because what germ-a-phobe wants to nurse sitting on a potty? Nope, I found a little nook right by the exit door and let all my fellow bathroom goers see me in all my milk making glory.

I think the strangest place I have nursed would be walking around shopping at Wal-Mart while son #2 was in his Moby Wrap. I just put my "hooter hider" over him and let him eat as we continued to shop. I absolutely refuse to use a bathroom to feed him. I love having the Moby Wrap...I wouldn't be able to get anything done without it. It makes shopping trips with a 3-year-old and 3-month-old doable.
I also have to pump at work (I work part-time at Target) and have to get one of the LOD's (lead on duty) to unlock an office for me. I think I embarrassed the fresh out of college LOD when he asked "why" and I answered, "gotta get milk" I forget some aren't as comfortable as I am about something that is completely natural. Oh well.
I have to say, love living vicariously through you having a daughter since I have been blessed with 2 boys. Thanks.

Bailey has been changed in 2 odd places. FIRST, at 2 weeks we HAD to change her in the car AT my grandma's funeral! My husband opened the car door so that he could go to the other side and once the wind hit her little bottom she peed ALL Over the car seat! So, mommy had to sit in the back. MEN! Then, a few weeks ago, I literally had to strip her completely naked in the back of Sam's Club. The bathroom was at teh front of the store but she was TOTALLY soaked and so I put her in the cart on her blanket and changed diaper, clothes, and all right there.

When my oldest child (now 6) was a baby we flew from NH to IA. The bathroom was forever busy and he was a stinky mess, so we had to resort to changing him on those pull out trays! Bet the people in the next row enjoyed that. But atleast then I could bag that diaper up instead of subjecting everyone to the smell.

The oddest place I ever changed a diaper was right in the middle of an outdoor plaza in Pristina, Kosovo. We were living there a few years ago (after the war) and the public restrooms were horrible. So I had to change my little girl right on the concrete. No one said anything, but then again I don't speak Albanian.

The weirdest place I nursed (or tried to) was while she was in the Baby Bjorn in a grocery store. Turns out I'm not coordinated enough to nurse in a Baby Bjorn and I ended up semi-flashing a lot of people before giving up.

Craziest place to nurse was while standing in line for the new Toy Story Ride at Disney World. The line was REALLY long.... and well, he just couldn't wait. And, my then 5-1/2 year old and 2 year old were too excited to not enjoy the ride with them and their Daddy!
Thankfully my nursing cover worked well, but my arms were tired at the end :)

Hey Kelly,

I thought I would de-lurk and say 'Hi'! I have followed your blog since right before Harper was born and have enjoyed 'getting to know' your family! I look forward to seeing the pictures of Harper each day because it reminds me of my daughter when she was the age! :-) Enjoy every moment because before long she will be 12 and full raging hormones! :-) You show amazing grace in each and every post and are just a joy to read!
Great job...

Its not a strange place but a very tight place.Me and my daughter flew to Chicago when she was 4 months. She had diarrea and I had to go to the bathroom to change her. I couldn't find the baby changer to lay her on so I had to change her in my lap..Now if you have ever been in the plane batheroom you know there's not any room..I think the only room I had was enough for me because the BR were to small..After I changed her and got up..I saw the baby pull down changer..

I just changed my 2-yr-old's diaper in the middle of Target on Sunday. Actually we were down an aisle around electronics. It wasn't dirty, just whop-sided and starting to leak. I have mastered the art of changing a diaper while she is STANDING UP, so I was finished in under 20 seconds..... It was over before anyone could even look. ha ha!

Ok first a tip. You can nurse in Motherhood Maternity stores. They have dressing rooms prepared for that.
I guess the worst place for me to nurse was in the airport. I was already past security and there is NO WHERE to hide. It was my first baby so I was still getting use to nursing and wasn't quite comfortable in public.

Hi Kelly!

You don't know me, but I have prayed for you little Harper since my friend showed me your blog, just after Harper was born. I am a NICU nurse in Indiana as well as a mom of 3 boys, so I knew that Harpers condition was not good. God is truly an awesome God! I'm so thankful that Harper is doing well. Thank you for your word of encouragement, it's such a pick me upper. :> My boys are 7,4 and 2 and 1/2 so we are out of the baby stage, but I remember it well. It goes by all too fast. Have a great Easter weekend with your family. Blessings! Heather Albrecht

Hi Kelly! The strangest place I've ever had to change a diaper was in my car at the Sonic Drive-in (waiting for my vanilla coke - love them!). My mom actually changed my son's diaper in her lap in the back seat of my car. It was a difficult change, but she pulled it off like a champ! As for nursing, I'm not a public nurser, so I either nursed in my car or found a dressing room. Once my son could take a bottle, it was so much easier!
