Vacation and Baby Diet

Six weeks from this Thursday - this will be our view from our room for nine glorious mornings. (If we don't sell everything we own and stay there. A very likely possibility) :-)

This is giving me something to look forward to and something to be excited about. I absolutely can't wait to spend all that time alone with my husband in our favorite place on earth!!!!!

BUT that means I have six weeks to get bathing suit ready. The fertility drugs I have been on have made me gain 15 pounds in the last couple of months and that was on top of another 5-10 pounds I had gained in the last year or so. I probably won't lose 20 pounds in the next 6 weeks but I am sure going to try. Scott and I have even been going to the gym at 5 every morning!

My mother in law also sent me this article on a fertility diet. I've seen it before and it basically was what I had planned to follow - eating healthy, mostly chicken and vegetables, no carbs, and lots of nuts and dairy (read - ICE CREAM!). Why not give it a shot? So while we are on our break - I'm going to eat as healthy as possible. Hopefully I'll get a thinner body for Hawaii and a baby as a souvenier!

This is the fertility diet info in case anyone out there is interested:

Foods help regulate ovulation and fertility.

Peanuts NOT potatoes: The type of carbs you consume makes a big difference. "Slow carbs" (low-glycemic index foods such as peanuts, nuts, dried beans, whole grains) promote ovulation. "Fast carbs" that spike blood sugar (like cold cereal, white rice, white potatoes and sugary drinks) decrease fertility.
(Got some mixed nuts at my desk as we speak!)

Beans NOT beef: Participants in a study who ate the most animal protein were 39% more apt to have ovulatory infertility than women who ate the least. Even adding one daily serving of red meat or poultry could raise infertility risk by a third. Replacing 25 grams of animal protein with 25 grams of plant protein, such as dried beans, could cut risk of ovulatory infertility by half.
(No steaks at Does for the next few months)

Avocados NOT doughnuts: Trans fats are huge villains in infertility; the more eaten, the higher the chances of ovulatory infertility. Even the 4 grams of trans fat in a daily doughnut, compared with the monounsaturated fat in a serving of avocado, can more than double the infertility risk. Substitute unsaturated fats for trans fats, for a pregnancy boost.
(Guess I'm trading Krispy Kreme and all other fast foods for quacamole. OLE!)

Whole milk not fat-free yogurt: Heretical as it sounds, women troubled by infertility are advised to eat high-fat, rather than low-fat, dairy foods. Recommended to improve fertility: a glass of whole milk daily. Threats to fertility: frozen yogurt, sherbet and low-fat yogurt.
(Got some little single serving Blue Bells!!!)

Coffee not soda: Surprisingly, research finds that caffeine in moderation -- several cups of coffee or tea -- does not seem to interfere with becoming pregnant. But sugary soda (caffeinated and decaf) can seriously diminish fertility. Best beverage: lots of water. New studies suggest no caffeine after conception.
(So sorry Sonic - hope you don't go out of business while I quit cokes for a while)

P.S. We are going to Kauai. We went there two years ago when we first started trying for a baby. It was supposed to be our "last trip before a baby". Two years later we still don't have a baby. So hopefully this really will be a babymoon. I don't mean to make anyone jealous (even though it IS the most beautiful place on earth)...........as excited as I am to go - I would much rather be pregnant right now. I kind of consider this my consolation prize for infertility. ha!

This is just what the doctor ordered!!! I am so happy that you & Scott are getting away for awhile. Good luck on the diet and sorry about the Hogs!

What a wonderful view to look forward to! I need something to look forward to like that.

That diet sounds healthy for all of us. I started something similar today (well, no carbs and no sodas). I'm a little grouchy today without my diet coke.

Wow! You will love Hawaii! I've been once on a cruise and it truly is breathtaking!

I'll be praying for the "Hawaiian Souvenir"!!

Is that a picture of Heaven??

Personally, it looks an awful lot like what I think of when I picture it. :)

I hear you on the bathing suit issue. I sadly am going to a bachelorette weekend in Panama City the first weekend in April. I shed a tear each day thinking about being in a bathing suit this early.

And YOU GO GIRL on the 5am workouts. You are my hero. :)

Note about that fertility diet...I really think that the whole milk thing is soo true! I drank one glass of Braums Vitamin D milk a night the month we concieved. I also quit drinking caffiene altogether while we were TTC (7 months).

I really think a lot of those "Red meats" now a days are filtered with so many chemicals that are bad for us...so I am a firm believer in that diet. Now, I didn't go and change everything I ate to live by that diet, but it had a lot of great points.

Sounds like a great plan! I did weight watchers for the first time last year and lost 25 pounds in 2 and 1/2 months. I did not have to deprive myself. All I had to do was rearrange my eating as well proportion it out and exercise if I wanted a DQ blizzard or ice cream! I am going at it again and lost 4 pounds my first week! I did that last time too. You usually lose 4-6 the first week and then 1-3 every week after. I was at the 2-3 side of that last time! Anyway, I am interested in this fertility diet and am going to send it on to my friend Hannah. Brandon and I are also heading to Hawaii at the end of this year to celebrate him graduating and to do so before baby!! Since you've been (a couple of times it looks like??), we might get some suggestions!

I'm looking at this beautiful beach scene and trying really really hard not to be envious!!!! That is going to be WONDERFUL! Which island are you going to? You can't move there though...that would be too far to travel home with twins! :)

i was going to try and e-mail you, but can't find the address. anyways we stayed at resortquest on the east side of the island...we liked it b/c we could get to north and south sides easily by car, but weren't stuck with only eating at very expensive places like the hotel...which was 50$ each for breakfast...we just couldn't do that everyday and there was starbucks on the way whichever direction we went. where did you stay? we didn't get to go on our boat tour b/c of the hurricane that turned into a tropical storm. we drove everywhere we could on that island...we hit almost every beach! i could go on and on!!!! i love it!!! want to know more you can e-mail me at beccaz79@hotmail.com

I am so jealous that you are going to Kauai! It looks beautiful.

I read the article in Newsweek on the Infertility diet...everything in the article is listed here, plus a daily prenatal vitamin and the daily exercise. Also, the article said to limit the high-fat dairy to 2-half cup servings per week. So I guess you can enjoy your vanilla ice cream twice a week, that's great news right?!?!

I've been praying for you and hope this works!

Heather said...

I want to get in your suit case. Please make sure that you take lots of pictures. I think that I might start a the fertility diet. I gave up soda, then Sunday after church I hit up sonic... I think that it might help if you have other people doing it and then you can lean on them for help when you need a happy hour from sonic...

nuts and avocados and ice cream?! bless your mother-in-law, this sounds fabulous... do you have a link to this, or did you copy and paste all here? I found this other site with less-fun sounding, but still good info for this type of diet. Thanks for the forwarded advice

have a great holiday,
