If you read this blog........... I have a very serious question that I really need you to leave a comment and let me know what you think.
DO YOU TIP AT SONIC?
I've heard both ways on this subject and since I frequent Sonic at least once a day - it has really been bothering me. I want to do the right thing so I need to know your answers.
P.S. I just want to add that I usually always let them keep the change (when I'm not in the drive thru) but when I don't have cash and I use the Debit card dealie .....then I felt bad. It's been bugging me for a year now on the right thing. I mean it's fast food .... but I don't want to be the only one not tipping either. :-)

Typically, if I don't do the drive through, yes, I tip. Never more than $1, usually it's a "keep the change" type thing.
I won't say I ALWAYS do it.....
Usually I will say "keep the change," if all they do is deliver it. If I have them run in two or three times for napkins, sweet&low, and extra straws I will give them a dollar. I shouldn't be this way but I will admit it depends on how benevolent I am feeling that day. I remember one morning really early there was a sweet little lady that came poppin up to my window at 7am with a big smile on her face. A gave her a five dollar tip for delivering a small diet vanilla limeade, but I had a soft spot for her and thought maybe she needed it worse than I did. I will say however that is the only time I remember giving more than a $1 tip to any Sonic carhop but something in my spirit told me to hand it over! I don't believe that I'd ever heard of tipping at Sonic until they built the one in Flippin and it seemed like everyone tipped...so I started doing this. I guess there is no right or wrong answer, Kelly. I certainly don't think it makes you a bad person if you don't tip at Sonic and I admire that you care enough to ask for input!
Kelly-If you use your check card, it doesn't ask for a tip, so I assume that they don't rely on tips. That's what I do, so I don't feel guilty :)
If I don't do the drive through then I tell them to keep the change or at least give them 50c.
OK, now I'm falling out in the floor that Jill is commenting on your blog--that's hilarious! I'm telling you, you guys were born to be friends. I think we've debated this before maybe? I have no idea...I tend to take the avoidance route also. I thought about emailing Sonic to ask what they recommended.
Good question--I always feel weird, too. I was actually kinda relieved when they put in the credit/debit card machines because they don't give you a receipt to sign so I don't feel as bad. If I pay cash (which I very rarely have any cash) I usually do the "keep the change" thing--or add a quarter to it if the "change" is only like 6 cents...I don't want to insult anyone with 6 cents?? I'm glad you asked for comments because I liked reading what others said, too! I love Sonic, and now Rhett does. Monday we stopped next door to Sonic for gas at Kroger, and he saw Sonic and asked if he could "have Sonic chicken and a Sonic drink". Of course I took him, even though it was lunch hour and it took 20 minutes to just get those two items! :) jlg
